SEO for education is the work of getting a school's, college's or course provider's program pages and guides found when prospective students (and their parents or employers) search for what to study and where, and turning those visits into inquiries, applications and enrollments. The pages that matter most are program pages, because that's where the decision happens. Students compare programs on a short list of facts: cost, time to complete, format, accreditation or approval, admission requirements and outcomes. The institutions that rank are the ones that put those facts on the page plainly, back them with guides that answer the questions around the decision, and earn links from the bodies that vouch for them.

This guide covers what students compare by type of institution, how to build program pages, which structured data still does anything in 2026, a real case study from a licensing-course provider, and what our data shows for education sites.

Key takeaways

  • Program pages are the money pages. Put cost, time to complete, format, accreditation, requirements, deadlines and outcomes on the page, not in a PDF.
  • Students check federal data: the Department of Education's College Scorecard shows costs, debt, graduation rates and post-college earnings, so your numbers should match it.
  • Google stopped showing Course Info rich results in 2025 and FAQ rich results in May 2026. Course list structured data is still supported.
  • 24hourEDU, an online licensing-course provider, went from DR 1.2 to 30 and from 754 to 1,735 monthly Google clicks (July 2025 to July 2026) while publishing daily with Outrank.
  • In Outrank's study of 2,119 sites, 73% of 52 education and e-learning sites gained clicks, from a median 377 to 1,567 per 28 days.

What students compare, by type of institution

"Education" covers very different businesses, and each one is searched differently:

TypeWhat people searchWhat the page must answer
Universities and colleges"[program] degree [state]", "[college] acceptance rate", "[college] tuition"Cost and net price, admission requirements, deadlines, outcomes, accreditation
Community and technical colleges"[trade] program near me", "LPN program [county]", "transfer to [university]"Schedule, cost per credit, transfer agreements, job placement or licensure eligibility
Online degrees"online [degree] accredited", "fastest online [degree]", "[school] vs [school]"Accreditation, time to complete, cost per term, format, support
Licensing, certification and test prep"how to become a [profession] in [state]", "[license] pre-licensing course", "[exam] practice test"State requirements, approval by the regulator, pass rates you can prove, price
Private K-12 schools"private schools [city]", "Montessori [town]", "[school] tuition"Tuition, admissions process, open days, curriculum, transport
Course creators and bootcamps"learn [skill] online", "[bootcamp] review", "is [bootcamp] worth it"Curriculum, time, price, outcomes, refund policy

Two things cut across every row. First, prospective students check you against independent data. For US colleges, the Department of Education's College Scorecard shows "costs, student debt, graduation rates, admissions test scores and acceptance rates, student body diversity, post-college earnings, and more". If your page says one thing and the Scorecard says another, the student believes the Scorecard. Second, many of the best education searches are career searches ("how to become a mortgage loan officer in Texas"), not school searches. Whoever answers the career question gets to recommend the course.

Program pages are your money pages

Western Governors University's online B.S. in Cybersecurity page shows the structure. The page is organized into Overview, Courses, IT Certifications, Cost & Time, Flexible Schedule and Career Outlook sections, and the site links out to tuition by school, a tuition comparison, a net price calculator and state licensure information. A student can make most of the decision without leaving the page.

Every program page should cover:

  • Cost: tuition per credit, term or program, fees, and what financial aid or payment plans apply. A net price calculator if you have one.
  • Time and format: how long it takes full-time and part-time, online or on campus, start dates.
  • Accreditation or approval: who accredits the institution or approves the course, with a link to the accreditor or regulator.
  • Requirements and deadlines: prerequisites, documents, application deadlines.
  • Outcomes: the certifications or licenses graduates can sit for, which states the program satisfies licensing requirements in, and career data with a source.
  • The curriculum: course list with short descriptions, not just codes.
  • People: the faculty or instructors, with real bios.
  • One clear next step: request information, apply, or book a call.

Give each program its own page, and make each one genuinely different. Thirty program pages that share the same boilerplate with a different name in the H1 are thin pages, and Google treats them that way.

Structured data for schools in 2026

Structured data has changed more for education than for most sectors in the past two years:

  • Course Info rich results are gone. Google announced on June 12, 2025 that it would phase out Course Info (along with Learning Video, Estimated Salary and others), and removed it from Search Console reporting on September 9, 2025. Old advice to "add Course schema to show prices in search" no longer applies to that feature.
  • Course list is still supported. Google's course list documentation still describes a course list rich result in English, for pages listing several courses with their name, provider and description.
  • FAQ rich results were retired on May 7, 2026. Keep FAQs on program pages because students read them, not for a search snippet.
  • Event markup for open days and info sessions is still documented, and dates in your page copy matter more than the markup.

Case study: a licensing-course provider from DR 1 to 30

24hourEDU sells NMLS-approved mortgage loan officer licensing courses online. It launched in 2024, joined Outrank in August 2025 and published through WordPress, about one article a day, while the backlink exchange placed links from relevant sites. It also bought Outrank's one-time directory submission package.

24hourEDU Google clicks and Domain Rating

Monthly Google Search clicks (May 2025 to July 2026) and Ahrefs Domain Rating (July 2025 to September 2026). The site joined Outrank on August 18, 2025.

Over that period, the site's Ahrefs Domain Rating went from 1.2 to 30, it received 127 verified backlinks through the exchange, and Outrank published 373 articles. Monthly clicks went from 754 in July 2025 to 1,735 in July 2026, and impressions peaked at 421,867 in May 2026.

The honest reading: the site was already growing before it joined (507 clicks in May 2025, 754 in July), which is why the comparison is July to July, and impressions fell back from the May peak while clicks held. Jesse Kennedy, who handles student support, put it this way: "We have spent thousands more on SEO experts, who have not increased organic traffic like this ever."

Two lessons carry over to most education sites. A new domain needs links from relevant sites before its pages can compete, and 24hourEDU's Domain Rating rose fastest in its first five months. And licensing and career questions are where a course provider meets future students, so a steady stream of articles around them compounds.

Content that recruits students

Beyond program pages, these content types earn search traffic that turns into applications:

  • Career and licensing guides: "How to become a [profession] in [state]", with the regulator's requirements, costs and timeline, and your course as one route.
  • Cost and aid explainers: what a program really costs after aid, payment plans, employer tuition assistance, GI Bill eligibility.
  • Honest comparisons: online versus on-campus, certificate versus degree, your program versus the main alternatives, with the trade-offs stated.
  • "Is it worth it" pages: salary data from a named source, time to break even, who the program is not for.
  • Student and graduate stories: with names, programs and what they're doing now, published with consent.

This is long-tail work. In the 90 days to October 2026, the median keyword Outrank targeted across 200,871 articles had a difficulty of 14 and 170 searches a month. Outrank finds those questions for your programs, writes the articles with internal links to the right program pages, and publishes them to WordPress, Webflow and other CMSs daily. Outrank zero-click study, 14 education sites, 86% lost CTR

These are Outrank customer sites and medians, and they don't prove that publishing alone caused the growth. The CTR figure from our zero-click study is a planning warning: definitional questions ("what is a credit hour") increasingly get answered on the results page, so put more effort into pages only you can write, such as program details, outcomes, state-specific requirements and student stories.

Education has some of the most natural link sources of any sector, because so many organizations publish lists of approved or recognized providers:

  • Accreditors and state or professional regulators that list approved programs or course providers.
  • Professional associations in the field you teach, and employers who hire your graduates or pay for their training.
  • Transfer and articulation partners, high school counselors' resource pages and scholarship directories.
  • Local news, for new programs, graduate milestones and research.

Measure inquiries and applications, not visits

Set up request-information submissions, application starts and completed applications as key events in Google Analytics 4 (our Google Analytics guide walks through it), pass the source into your CRM, and review Search Console by program page. A program page with rising impressions and no inquiries usually has a content problem (missing cost or deadline information) rather than a ranking problem.

FAQ

What is SEO for education?

It's search engine optimization for schools, colleges, universities, online course providers and training companies: making program pages, guides and profiles rank for the searches prospective students make, and turning that traffic into inquiries and enrollments.

How can a school improve its SEO?

Give every program its own detailed page with cost, time, format, accreditation, requirements and outcomes, publish guides that answer career and cost questions, keep your Google Business Profile accurate for each campus, and earn links from accreditors, regulators, associations and partners.

Does Course schema still help in Google?

Partly. Google retired Course Info rich results in 2025, so markup no longer shows course details like prices in that feature. Course list structured data is still supported for pages that list several courses, in English.

What should a program page include?

Cost and payment options, time to complete, format and start dates, accreditation or approval, admission requirements and deadlines, the curriculum, outcomes such as certifications or licensure eligibility, instructor bios and one clear next step.

How long does SEO take for a school or course provider?

New domains need links before they rank, so plan on several months. 24hourEDU's Domain Rating rose from 1.2 to 25 in about five months, and across Outrank's 2,119-site study the median site had about twice its starting clicks after seven months.
