SEO for B2B is the work of getting found by business buyers while they research a purchase, and it differs from consumer SEO in three ways: the searches are few, each customer is worth a lot, and a group of people decides. If you're doing it in-house, the order that works is: build bottom-of-funnel pages for buyers already comparing options (alternatives, comparisons, pricing, use cases, integrations), then answer the questions your sales team hears every week, then earn links and AI visibility. Measure the pipeline it creates, not traffic.
This is the do-it-yourself playbook. If you'd rather hire, we compare B2B SEO services and B2B SEO agencies separately. Manufacturers have their own spec-driven guide: SEO for manufacturers.
Key takeaways
- Value B2B keywords by deal size, not search volume. Ten pages that each rank for a 100-search keyword can be worth more than one page ranking for 5,000.
- Build bottom-of-funnel pages first: alternatives, comparisons, pricing, use cases and integrations. Buyers who search these are already choosing a vendor.
- B2B buyers first contact sellers 61% of the way through their journey, and the winner is on the day-one shortlist 95% of the time (6sense, 2025).
- 51% of B2B software buyers now start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google (G2, April 2026). Google visibility is still the strongest predictor of AI citations in Outrank's data.
- In Outrank's study, 79% of 111 B2B services sites grew their Google clicks, from a median 124 to 389 per 28 days.
What makes B2B search different
Most of the differences come from how companies buy:
- Buyers research alone. In 6sense's 2025 Buyer Experience Report (just under 4,000 respondents), buyers first contacted sellers 61% of the way through their journey, and 95% of the time the winning vendor was already on the day-one shortlist. Gartner reports that 61% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free buying experience.
- A committee decides. Forrester's State of Business Buying 2026 counts on average 13 internal stakeholders and nine external participants per purchase. The CFO, the end user and IT search for different things.
- AI is now part of the research. In G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software decision makers, 51% said they start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google, up from 29% eleven months earlier. (G2 runs a review site, so it has an interest in this story, but the direction matches what we see in Search Console.)
- Volumes are tiny. A specific B2B search might get 30 to 300 searches a month. Keyword tools often show zero for terms that bring real demo requests.
The practical consequence: your website has to sell before anyone talks to you, and it has to do so for several roles at once.
Put a value on a keyword before you write
The most common B2B SEO mistake is skipping a keyword because a tool says 50 searches a month. Run the numbers with your own conversion rates instead:
Interactive calculator
What is a low-volume B2B keyword worth?
First-year revenue per year
$51,120
- Visits per year
- 852
- Leads per year
- 17.04
- New customers per year
- 3.41
With the example values, ten pages ranking first for 100-search keywords bring in about 850 visits and roughly three customers a year. Whether that's worth it depends on your contract value, which is why a B2B company with $15,000 contracts should treat a 100-search keyword very differently from a consumer app.
Build bottom-of-funnel pages first
Pages for buyers who are already comparing vendors convert best, and they're the pages most B2B sites are missing. Build them before the blog:
| Page type | Example search | Who it's for | Done well by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alternatives | "[competitor] alternatives" | Buyers unhappy with a current tool | Most SaaS companies with a known competitor |
| Comparison | "[you] vs [competitor]" | Buyers with a shortlist | Honest pages that say who should pick the other tool |
| Pricing | "[you] pricing", "[category] cost" | The CFO and the champion | A public pricing page, or real ranges if you quote |
| Use case or industry | "[category] for law firms" | Buyers who need proof you fit their situation | One page per industry or role you actually serve |
| Integration | "[tool A] [tool B] integration" | Buyers checking their stack | Zapier's pair pages, like Google Sheets + Slack |
| Free tool | "[task] calculator", "[task] checker" | People doing the job your product does | Ahrefs' free SEO tools |
| Security and compliance | "[you] SOC 2", "[you] GDPR" | IT and procurement | A trust page with certifications and documents |
Two notes from Outrank's study of 6.2 million pages. Free tools and calculators earned 2.11× the click-through rate of the same site's articles at positions 4 to 10, and took 34.1% of clicks while getting 14.2% of impressions. Comparison and alternatives pages earned about the same click-through rate as other articles (0.88×); their value is who clicks, not how many.
For comparison pages, be fair to the competitor. Buyers check, AI assistants summarize, and a page that admits where the other tool is stronger is more likely to be trusted and quoted.
Then answer the questions your sales team hears
Your best content ideas are in sales calls, support tickets and RFP questionnaires, not in keyword tools. Every week, collect:
- Objections ("Does it work with Salesforce?", "How long does implementation take?") and turn each into a page or an FAQ entry.
- Problems before the product ("how to reduce invoice processing time", "how to forecast churn") for the people who don't know your category exists yet.
- Questions from other committee members: the security questions IT asks, the ROI questions finance asks, the training questions end users ask.
- The words customers use. If buyers say "contract repository" and you say "agreement intelligence platform", write the page in their words.
These searches often don't show in keyword tools. Publish anyway, then check Search Console after a few weeks: queries you never targeted will show up, and they point to the next page to write. Our guide to keyword research for software companies goes deeper on this.
Show up when buyers ask AI
Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode for shortlists. Getting named there has a lot in common with ranking on Google. In Outrank's study of how sites get cited by AI assistants, Google impressions were the strongest predictor of AI citations (a Spearman correlation of 0.80), and 67% of sites with fewer than 50 Google-visible pages had no AI citations at all.
What helps B2B companies specifically:
- State the facts AI needs in plain text: what you do, who it's for, pricing, integrations, where you're based.
- Be present on the sites AI cites: review platforms, comparison articles, partner directories.
- Keep facts consistent everywhere. Different pricing on your site and a review site confuses buyers and models alike.
Our guide on getting ChatGPT to recommend your product covers the details, and Outrank's AI visibility tracking shows where ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features mention you. No tool can promise an AI will recommend you; tracking tells you whether the work is landing.
Links: where B2B companies earn them
- Partners and integrations: app marketplace listings and your partners' integration pages.
- Customers: case studies co-published with the customer, and "built with" or "powered by" mentions.
- Original data: benchmarks from your product data (anonymized) or a survey of your customers. B2B journalists and bloggers need numbers.
- Podcasts and webinars in your niche, which usually link to guests.
- Review platforms and directories relevant to your category.

Measure pipeline, not traffic
With sales cycles of months, traffic is a weak proxy. Track:
- Key events in Google Analytics 4: demo requests, trial sign-ups, contact forms, pricing page views.
- Original source in your CRM for every lead and opportunity, synced from your analytics or forms.
- Self-reported attribution: a free-text "How did you hear about us?" field on the demo form. It catches the buyer who read three of your articles, asked ChatGPT, then typed your URL directly.
- Search Console queries by page, to see which pages pull in buyer searches and which only attract students.
- Pipeline influenced by content: opportunities where someone on the buying team visited a comparison, pricing or case study page.
Report quarterly. Our guide to creating an SEO report has a format executives read.
What results to expect
B2B sites start from low traffic, so relative growth looks large while absolute numbers stay modest. In Outrank's study of Search Console data from 2,119 sites:

FAQ
What is B2B SEO?
B2B SEO is search engine optimization for companies that sell to other businesses. It focuses on low-volume, high-value searches made by buyers researching a purchase, such as comparisons, alternatives, pricing, use cases and integrations, and it's measured in leads and pipeline rather than traffic.
How is B2B SEO different from B2C SEO?
B2B searches have much lower volume, each customer is worth far more, several people influence the decision and the sales cycle can last months. So B2B SEO targets specific buyer searches that keyword tools often undercount, creates pages for each member of the buying group, and tracks results in the CRM rather than in sessions.
Which pages should a B2B company build first?
Start with bottom-of-funnel pages: competitor alternatives, head-to-head comparisons, pricing, use-case or industry pages and integration pages. Buyers searching these are already choosing a vendor. Then build guides that answer the questions your sales team hears every week.
Is it worth targeting keywords with low search volume in B2B?
Usually yes. A keyword with 100 monthly searches can produce a few qualified leads a year, and with contract values in the thousands, one customer pays for the page many times over. Keyword tools also undercount B2B searches, so real demand is often higher than the tool shows.
How do you measure B2B SEO ROI with a long sales cycle?
Track demo requests and sign-ups as key events, record the original source of every lead in your CRM, and add a free-text "How did you hear about us?" field. Report pipeline and revenue influenced by organic search quarterly, because a visit in one quarter often becomes a deal two or three quarters later.
