Organic SEO services are the work that earns a website traffic from unpaid search results: technical fixes, keyword research, on-page optimization, content, link building, local SEO and reporting. Each one has a deliverable you can check. Results build slowly and then compound: across sites that joined Outrank, the median site reached 2.04× its previous Google clicks after seven months, with the first three months the slowest (Outrank results data, October 2026).
Below: each service with what you should receive and how to verify it, a short quiz to find which service you need first, real growth curves from Search Console data, what the services cost, and which parts are worth doing yourself.
Key takeaways
- Organic search produced 33% of overall website traffic across seven industries in 2024, according to Conductor.
- Every organic SEO service should leave evidence: fixed URLs in Search Console, approved keyword maps, published pages, a list of every link placed and monthly reports.
- The median site on Outrank grew its Google clicks 1.07× in the first 28 days, 1.43× by month three and 2.04× by month seven (Search Console data, October 2026).
- Publishing pace matters: sites publishing 30+ articles a month reached a median 2.27× their pre-Outrank clicks, against 1.07× for sites publishing fewer than 5.
- Organic rankings now feed AI answers too: in Outrank's study of 200 sites, Google impressions were the strongest predictor of AI citations.
What makes SEO "organic"
Organic search results are the unpaid listings Google ranks on relevance and quality; paid results are ads marked "Sponsored" that stop the moment you stop paying. Organic SEO services work only on the first kind.
That channel is still large. Conductor found organic search produced 33% of overall website traffic across seven key industries in 2024. It's also changing: when Google shows an AI summary, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, according to Pew Research Center (2025). Good organic SEO in 2026 therefore aims at both: ranking in the classic results and being the source AI answers cite.
The organic SEO services, one by one
Here's what each service is, what you should receive, and how to check it was done. If a provider can't show you the evidence column, the work probably isn't happening.
| Service | What you should receive | How to verify it | Free way to do it yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | Audit with prioritised fixes; fixes shipped or handed to your developer | Search Console → Indexing → Pages: fewer important URLs excluded; Core Web Vitals report improving | Search Console, PageSpeed Insights |
| Keyword research and strategy | A keyword map: each target keyword assigned to one page, with intent and difficulty | You approved the list; no two pages target the same keyword | Keyword Planner; Outrank's free keyword research tool |
| On-page optimization | Rewritten titles, descriptions, headings, internal links and copy on existing pages | Change log with before and after; impressions rising for those pages | Search Console's Queries report |
| Content creation | New pages and articles that answer searches you don't cover yet | Published URLs, each mapped to a keyword | Your own writing time |
| Link building and digital PR | Links and mentions from relevant sites | A monthly list of every link with its URL; none paid to pass ranking credit | Partners, suppliers, associations, original data |
| Local SEO | Optimised Google Business Profile, consistent citations, reviews process, area pages | Business Profile calls, direction requests and website clicks | Google Business Profile, Bing Places |
| Reporting | Monthly report on clicks, conversions and work done | Numbers match your own Search Console and analytics | Search Console plus a spreadsheet |
Two notes on the riskiest line. Links that are bought or swapped to pass ranking credit count as link schemes under Google's spam policies, and Google's advice on hiring an SEO says you should never have to link to your SEO. Ask how links are earned, and get the list. Our guide on how to build backlinks shows the methods that hold up.

How long organic SEO services take to work
The honest answer is months, not weeks. The chart below comes from Outrank's published results data: every site with 30+ Google clicks in the 28 days before joining, compared with itself, in 28-day periods. The value 1.0 is the 28 days before joining; medians throughout.

What the data says, and what it doesn't:
- The first three months are slow. The median site was at 1.07× in its first 28 days and 1.43× by month three. Google needs time to crawl, index and test new pages.
- Then it compounds. 2.04× by month seven and 2.37× after about eleven months, against 11% growth in the six months before joining.
- Pace matters. Sites publishing 30+ articles a month reached 2.27×, against 1.07× for those publishing fewer than 5. Sites receiving 30+ backlinks a month reached 2.18×.
- It's not guaranteed. 74.5% of sites got more clicks than before joining, which means about a quarter didn't. And the breakdowns are correlations: busier sites may differ in other ways too.
This is data from one platform's customers, not a controlled experiment, but it's a fair benchmark for any organic SEO service: if month three looks flat and nothing has shipped, ask why. Month three looking flat after a lot of shipped work is normal.
Organic SEO feeds AI search too
Clients now ask whether organic SEO services cover ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Mostly, yes: the same work drives both. In Outrank's study of 200 sites, Google impressions were the strongest predictor of AI citations, and sites with Domain Rating 30+ got 29× the citations of sites under DR 10.
What changes is measurement. Rankings and clicks don't show whether an AI assistant mentions you, so track that separately; Outrank's AI visibility tracking covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI features. No provider can promise that an assistant will recommend you.
What organic SEO services cost
Most organic SEO is sold as a monthly retainer: 78.2% of providers in Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers charge that way. Agencies average US$3,209 a month, freelancers US$1,349 and local SEO US$1,557, and the average hourly rate is US$111. Divide any retainer by the hourly rate: a US$1,000 package at US$111 an hour is about nine hours of work across every service above.
Prices vary a lot by country. We've broken them down in local currency for the UK and Australia, and our guide to affordable SEO plans compares low-cost software and service options.
Which services to do yourself, buy or automate
Not every service needs an expert at expert rates.
- Do yourself: Google Business Profile, review requests, basic on-page fixes (titles, headings, internal links) and reading Search Console. These need care, not specialist skills.
- Buy from a specialist: site migrations, complex technical problems, international setups, and digital PR. Mistakes here are expensive and hard to undo.
- Automate: keyword research and steady content production. This is the most time-consuming recurring part, and the one where consistency matters most (see the publishing-pace tab in the chart above).
Outrank automates that last part: it finds keywords your site can realistically rank for (the median target in its platform data has a difficulty of 14), writes 30 SEO articles a month, publishes them to your CMS and builds backlinks through its exchange network, for US$99 a month (October 2026). It doesn't do on-site technical fixes, local listings or digital PR. If you want the content side fully managed, Outrank Agency is the done-for-you version, with every article reviewed by human editors and SEO specialists.

FAQ
What are organic SEO services?
Organic SEO services are the work that improves a website's rankings in unpaid search results: technical SEO, keyword research, on-page optimization, content creation, link building, local SEO and reporting. They don't include paid ads.
What's the difference between organic SEO and paid search?
Organic SEO earns unpaid rankings that keep sending traffic after the work is done. Paid search buys ad placements that stop when the budget stops. Most businesses use paid search for immediate demand and organic SEO for traffic that compounds.
How long do organic SEO services take to work?
Usually three to six months before results are clear, longer in competitive markets. In Outrank's Search Console data, the median site reached 1.43× its starting clicks by month three and 2.04× by month seven.
What should an organic SEO package include?
A clear split of monthly hours across technical work, content, links and reporting, a keyword map you approve, a list of every link placed, and reports based on Search Console clicks and conversions. Local businesses should also get Business Profile and citation work.
How much do organic SEO services cost?
Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers puts the average agency retainer at US$3,209 a month and freelancers at US$1,349, with an average hourly rate of US$111. Software such as Outrank covers keyword research, content and publishing for US$99 a month.
Do organic SEO services help with AI search like ChatGPT?
Largely, yes. In Outrank's study of 200 sites, Google impressions were the strongest predictor of AI citations, so the work that grows organic visibility also tends to grow AI mentions. Track AI visibility separately, because rankings don't show it.
