An organic SEO company is an agency that grows the traffic you get from unpaid search results, through technical fixes, content and links, rather than through ads. To choose one, ask for Search Console results from a client like you, get the monthly hours and deliverables in writing, make sure every link they build can be listed and checked, and walk away from anyone who guarantees rankings. Expect to pay around US$3,200 a month for an agency on average, or about US$1,350 for a freelancer, based on Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers.
This guide covers what an organic SEO company should actually do each month, how agencies compare with consultants, freelancers and software, a scorecard you can use on proposals, how to read their case studies, which pricing models to avoid, and what the first six months should look like.
Key takeaways
- Organic search produced 33% of overall website traffic across seven industries in 2024, according to Conductor. That's the channel an organic SEO company is paid to grow.
- Agencies average US$3,209 a month and freelancers US$1,349 in Ahrefs' survey; the most common retainer bracket is US$501 to US$1,000.
- Google's guidance is blunt: no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and you should only grant read access to Search Console while an SEO audits your site.
- In Outrank's data from 2,119 sites, the median site gained 7% more clicks in the first 28 days and about 2× by month seven. Three slow months are normal; three flat months with no work shipped are not.
- Judge an SEO company on clicks and enquiries from Search Console, not on a screenshot of one keyword ranking.
What an organic SEO company actually does
Organic SEO is the work of earning rankings in Google's unpaid results. A real organic SEO company does four things, every month, and can show you each one:
- Technical fixes so Google can crawl, render and index your important pages (Search Console → Indexing → Pages is the starting point).
- Content that matches what your customers search: new pages, and updates to pages that already rank on page two.
- Links and mentions from relevant sites, earned or placed in ways that don't break Google's spam policies.
- Measurement that ties the work to clicks, enquiries and revenue.
What it doesn't do: run your Google Ads. Many "digital marketing agencies" sell SEO next to paid search, social and web design, and SEO often becomes the smallest line in the retainer. When we checked page one of Clutch's SEO directories for London, Birmingham, Sydney and Melbourne in October 2026, only 23% to 34% of the listed firms said SEO was at least half of their work. Ask any agency what share of its revenue comes from SEO.
Organic search is worth the effort: Conductor found organic search produced 33% of overall website traffic across seven key industries in 2024.
Agency, consultant, freelancer, software or in-house?
An organic SEO agency is one of five ways to buy the same outcome. Prices below are Ahrefs survey averages (estimated from the top of each respondent's price bracket) unless noted.
Ways to buy organic SEO, compared
| SEO agency | $3,209 | $98.90 | Businesses with nobody in-house who want the work done | SEO buried inside a bigger marketing retainer |
| SEO consultancy | $3,250 | $171.18 | Teams that can execute but need strategy and audits | Advice that never gets implemented |
| Freelancer | $1,349 | $71.59 | A focused job: local SEO, a technical cleanup, content | Capacity and continuity if they get busy |
| Software (Outrank) | $99 | — | Consistent keyword research, articles and publishing | Doesn't do on-site technical fixes or local listings |
| In-house hire | — | — | Large sites with ongoing SEO work every week | Salary, tools and management time; one person can't cover every skill |

Two patterns hold up in practice. A small business with a simple site often gets more from a freelancer plus software than from a mid-priced agency. A company whose revenue depends on organic search usually needs an agency or an in-house lead, with a consultant for second opinions. How to read an organic SEO company's case study
Most case studies are designed to impress, not to inform. Four questions separate the real ones:
- Clicks or rankings? "Ranked #1 for 50 keywords" can mean 50 keywords nobody searches. Ask for clicks from Search Console.
- Compared with what? A 300% increase from August to December means little for a business with a December peak. Ask for year-over-year, same months.
- What did they actually do? Pages published, links earned, fixes shipped. If the work isn't described, it can't be repeated for you.
- How long did it take? Real SEO results compound over months. A case study claiming page one in two weeks for a competitive term deserves a hard look.

Pricing models: what to accept and what to avoid
Monthly retainers dominate: 78.2% of providers in Ahrefs' survey charge that way, 48.9% offer per-project pricing and 34.8% hourly (many offer more than one). All three can be fine if the deliverables are clear.
Be careful with performance-based pricing ("pay only when you rank"). It rewards whatever is easiest to move, usually obscure keywords, and can push providers toward risky link tactics because the penalty lands on your site, not theirs. If you use it at all, tie payment to clicks or qualified leads from Search Console and your CRM, never to rankings.
Be equally careful with very cheap retainers. At Ahrefs' average of US$111 an hour, a US$500 package buys about four and a half hours of work a month. That can cover maintenance; it can't cover content, links and technical work together. Our guides to cheap SEO and affordable SEO plans show what low budgets realistically buy.
What the first six months should look like
| Period | What should happen | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Audit, organic competitor analysis, keyword plan you approve, tracking set up | A written plan and a list of fixes |
| Months 2 to 3 | Technical fixes shipped, first new pages, updates to page-two pages, first links | Impressions rising in Search Console; few clicks yet |
| Months 4 to 6 | Steady publishing and link building, pages refined based on data | Clicks and enquiries climbing on the pages worked on |
For a benchmark, Outrank's study of 2,119 sites using its platform found the median site gained 7% more clicks in the first 28 days, 27% after 84 days and about 2× by month seven: three slow months, then compounding. Your agency's curve may differ, but if nothing has shipped by month three, that's the problem, not the algorithm.

Where Outrank fits
Outrank isn't an agency you brief; it's software that finds keywords your site can rank for, writes and publishes 30 SEO articles a month to your CMS, and builds backlinks through its exchange network, for US$99 a month (October 2026). It's the cheapest way to cover the content and link-building parts of organic SEO consistently. It doesn't do on-site technical fixes or local listings.
If you want an organic SEO company to do it for you, Outrank Agency is the done-for-you version, with every article reviewed by human editors and SEO specialists. Agencies running many client sites can use Outrank with volume pricing.
FAQ
What is an organic SEO company?
An organic SEO company is an agency that increases the traffic a business gets from unpaid search results. Its work covers technical fixes, content, links and measurement, as opposed to paid search ads.
How much does an organic SEO company cost?
In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, agencies averaged US$3,209 a month and freelancers US$1,349, with US$501 to US$1,000 the most common retainer bracket. Local SEO averaged US$1,557. Always divide the retainer by the hourly rate to see how much work you're buying.
What's the difference between an organic SEO agency and a digital marketing agency?
An organic SEO agency focuses on unpaid search rankings. A digital marketing agency sells several channels, often including paid ads, social and web design, and SEO may be a small part of the work. Ask what share of the agency's work is SEO and who would run your account.
How long does it take an organic SEO company to get results?
Expect three to six months before clear results, longer in competitive markets. In Outrank's data from 2,119 sites, the median site grew 7% in the first 28 days and reached about 2× its starting clicks after seven months.
What are organic competitors?
Organic competitors are the websites that rank for the same search queries as you. They often differ from your business competitors, for example a publisher or directory that ranks for your services. A good SEO company identifies them before building a keyword plan.
Can an organic SEO company guarantee first-page rankings?
No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and lists ranking guarantees as a warning sign when hiring an SEO. A credible company commits to work and reporting, not to positions.
