Most Australian small businesses pay A$1,400 to A$2,500 a month (ex GST) for an ongoing SEO retainer, and mid-sized businesses A$1,600 to A$7,500, based on the published price ranges of Sydney agency Safari Digital (updated October 2026). Agency time costs about A$143 to A$285 an hour: that's where most agencies on Clutch's Sydney and Melbourne pages set their rates. A full-time in-house SEO specialist costs roughly A$100,000 a year once you add 12% super to the A$90,000 median salary on Seek.
Below you'll find every figure with its source and date, how many hours each budget actually buys, what Sydney and Melbourne agencies charge per hour, the costs that don't show up on the first quote, and a calculator you can run with your own numbers.
Key takeaways
- A typical Australian small-business SEO retainer is A$1,400 to A$2,500 a month ex GST; one-off setup projects run A$3,500 to A$10,000+ (Safari Digital's published ranges, October 2026).
- Of the agencies that list a rate on page one of Clutch's Sydney and Melbourne SEO directories, 77% and 81% charge US$100 an hour or more (about A$143+), based on our count on 19 October 2026.
- At A$180 an hour, a A$1,500 retainer buys about 8 hours of work a month. Divide every quote by the hourly rate before you compare packages.
- An in-house SEO specialist costs about A$8,400 a month before tools: Seek's A$90,000 median salary plus the 12% super guarantee.
- Bing still had 9.2% of Australian searches in September 2026 (StatCounter), so claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, not only your Google Business Profile.
SEO prices in Australia at a glance
There is no official price list for SEO in Australia, so the honest answer combines several sources. Each one measures something slightly different, which is why quotes vary so much.
| What you buy | Typical cost (AUD) | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Agency retainer, small business | A$1,400 to A$2,500 a month, ex GST | Safari Digital, Oct 2026 |

| Agency retainer, large business | A$2,500 to A$10,000+ a month (enterprise from A$7,500) | Safari Digital, Oct 2026 |
| One-off setup or foundation project | A$3,500 to A$10,000+ | Safari Digital, Oct 2026 |
| Agency hourly rate | A$180 to A$300+ (Safari); most Clutch-listed Sydney and Melbourne agencies charge US$100 to US$199, about A$143 to A$285 | Safari Digital; Clutch Sydney and Clutch Melbourne, 19 Oct 2026 |
| Freelancer | No Australian survey exists. Globally, freelancers average US$1,349 a month (about A$1,930) and US$72 an hour (about A$102) | Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers |
| In-house SEO specialist | A$75,000 to A$95,000 typical salary, A$90,000 median, plus 12% super | Seek salary data, Oct 2026; ATO |

US dollar figures are converted at the European Central Bank reference rates for 19 October 2026 (US$1 ≈ A$1.43). Safari Digital is an agency, so treat its ranges as one well-documented market view rather than a survey. They line up with the global data: Ahrefs puts the average agency retainer at US$3,209 a month (about A$4,590) and local SEO at US$1,557 (about A$2,230).
What A$1,000, A$2,500 and A$5,000 a month actually buy
SEO is sold by the month but delivered by the hour. Dividing the retainer by the hourly rate tells you more than any package name.
| Monthly retainer | Hours at A$180/h | Hours at A$143/h | What realistically fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| A$1,000 | about 5.5 | about 7 | Google Business Profile upkeep, a monthly check of Search Console, one page improved, a short report |
| A$2,500 | about 14 | about 17.5 | The above, plus two to four new or rewritten pages, citation cleanup, some outreach for links |
| A$5,000 | about 28 | about 35 | A real content program, technical fixes with your developer, steady link building, conversion tracking |
The hourly rates are the bottom of Safari Digital's published agency range (A$180) and the bottom of the most common Clutch band (US$100, about A$143). The "what fits" column is an illustration, not a benchmark: one complex technical fix can eat a whole month at the low end.
Two practical consequences:
- Below about A$1,000 a month you're buying maintenance, not growth. That can be exactly right for a tradie in one suburb with a well-built site. It won't move a competitive service page in the Sydney CBD.
- Ask for the hours in writing. "Up to 10 hours, of which 4 on content and 3 on links" is a package you can check. "Comprehensive SEO" is not.

What Sydney and Melbourne SEO agencies charge per hour
We counted the hourly rates listed by every agency on page one of Clutch's Sydney (628 companies listed in total) and Melbourne (632 companies) SEO directories on 19 October 2026. Clutch shows rates in US dollars; the chart keeps its bands and the caption converts them.

What the count shows:
- US$100 to US$149 (about A$143 to A$213) is the most common band in both cities. 36% of Sydney agencies and 40% of Melbourne agencies list it.
- Sydney has more premium shops. 14% of Sydney agencies list US$200 to US$300 an hour, against 2% in Melbourne.
- The cheap end is rarely SEO-first. 9 of the 11 listings under US$50 an hour across both cities are multi-service firms (outsourcing, web development, paid ads) where SEO is 40% or less of their work, by Clutch's own service breakdown.
- Minimum project sizes are modest. 59% of Sydney listings and 65% of Melbourne listings that show one set their minimum project at US$1,000.
This is a snapshot, not a survey: Clutch's page one includes paid placements and favours agencies that collect Clutch reviews. It's still a useful reality check on any quote. Plug in real quotes when you have them. The defaults are the sourced figures above.

Australian SEO budget calculator (AUD)
Agency, total over the period
A$30,000
- Hours of agency work per month
- 13.9 h
- In-house, per month (salary plus 12% super)
- A$8,400
- In-house, total over the period
- A$100,800
- Outrank software, total over the period (US$99 ≈ A$142 a month)
- A$1,704
A rough rule from the numbers: an in-house hire only beats an agency once your SEO needs exceed about 45 agency hours a month (A$8,400 divided by A$180 an hour). Below that, buy hours. Above it, hire, and keep an agency or consultant for audits and second opinions.
Costs that don't show up on the first quote
The retainer is rarely the whole bill. Ask about each of these before you sign:
- GST. Most agency quotes, including Safari Digital's ranges, are ex GST. If your business isn't registered for GST (turnover under A$75,000, per the ATO), you pay the extra 10% and can't claim it back.
- Content. Some retainers include two posts a month; others bill every page separately. Ask for the number of pages and the word count included.
- Links. "Link building" can mean outreach hours, paid placements or both. Ask how links are found, whether any are paid, and get a list of every link placed. Google's spam policies treat paid links that pass ranking credit as link schemes. Our guide to how many backlinks you need helps you sanity-check the volume.
- Developer time. Agencies usually recommend technical fixes; your web developer implements them. Budget for that separately.
- Tools and reporting. Some agencies pass on tool subscriptions or charge for dashboards.
- Lock-in. Check the minimum term before anything else. A three-month initial term with 30 days' notice after that is a fair ask.
- Ownership. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics and every page written for you should be in your name, with the agency added as a user.
Local SEO in Australia: what to do before you pay anyone
If you serve customers in a city or region, local SEO is the cheapest win available, and most of it costs nothing but time. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you can't pay for a better local ranking.
- 1
Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Pick the most specific primary category, add your real trading name (no keywords), opening hours, services and photos. Service-area businesses can list up to 20 service areas by suburb or postcode, not by radius. - 2
Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect
Bing had 9.2% of Australian searches in September 2026 (StatCounter), and Apple Maps is the default maps app on iPhone. Both are free. - 3
Fix your core Australian citations
BrightLocal's list of top Australian citation sites includes True Local, Localsearch, Yellow Pages Australia and Word of Mouth Australia. Same name, address and phone number everywhere. - 4
Ask every happy customer for a Google review
Prominence is partly based on how many reviews you have and your rating. Send the review link by SMS right after the job, and reply to every review. - 5
Build one page per service and per main area
A Parramatta plumber needs a page for blocked drains and a page for Parramatta, each with real jobs, photos and prices, not the same text with the suburb swapped.
Then look for local links: your industry association, suppliers who list stockists, a local sports club you sponsor, your state chamber of commerce (for example Business NSW or the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry). One relevant local link is often worth more than a pile of directory listings.
Industry guides go further: see our playbooks for plumbers, electricians and restaurants.
How to check an Australian SEO quote in five minutes
- Look up the ABN on ABN Lookup. Check the business name, how long it has been registered and whether it's registered for GST.
- Reject ranking guarantees. Google states plainly that "no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google".
- Ask for the hours, the deliverables and the reporting in writing, as above.
- Give read access first. Google recommends granting only read access to Search Console during an audit.
- Ask what happens when you leave: who keeps the content, the links and the accounts.

Where software fits, and where Outrank fits
Software won't fix your Google Business Profile or answer the phone, but it can take over the most expensive recurring part of SEO: researching keywords, writing articles and publishing them.
Outrank costs US$99 a month (about A$142), or US$999 a year, as of October 2026. That includes 30 researched SEO articles a month published to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Wix and other CMSs, keyword research with live volume and difficulty, and backlinks through Outrank's exchange network. It doesn't do Google Business Profile management, citations, on-site technical fixes or local link outreach, so a local business still needs to do (or buy) those.
Across the sites in Outrank's own study, the median site reached 2.04× its pre-Outrank Google clicks after seven months, with the first three months slow. If you'd rather have the whole thing done for you, Outrank Agency is the done-for-you version, with every article reviewed by human editors and SEO specialists.
