SEO in the UK typically costs £500 to £5,000 a month with an agency, £240 to £320 a day with a freelancer, and £32,000 to £55,000 a year in salary for an experienced in-house specialist, before employer National Insurance. The most common retainer among UK-based SEOs in Ahrefs' pricing survey was US$1,001 to US$1,500 a month, which is about £750 to £1,125. London agencies charge more per hour than Birmingham ones, and agency quotes are often ex VAT, so check.

This guide puts every figure next to its source and date, shows what each budget buys in hours, compares London and Birmingham agency rates from Clutch's directories, and ends with a calculator in pounds.

Key takeaways

  • UK agency SEO retainers run from about £500 to £5,000+ a month; the most common bracket among UK SEOs in Ahrefs' survey was US$1,001–1,500 (about £750–£1,125).
  • Freelance SEO day rates average £240 to £320, according to Prospects (February 2026), with technical specialists charging up to £800 a day.
  • Of the agencies listing a rate on page one of Clutch's London SEO directory, 70% charge US$100 an hour or more (about £75+). In Birmingham it's 54%.
  • An experienced in-house SEO earns £32,000 to £55,000. Employers also pay 15% National Insurance on earnings above £5,000 (2026/27 rates).
  • Divide any retainer by the hourly rate. At £85 an hour, a £1,000 package buys under 12 hours of work a month.

Two of these come from people selling SEO (TJ Creative is an agency, Bark is a marketplace), so read them as market views, not neutral surveys. They agree with the independent data on the shape of the market: a long tail of cheap, small packages, a middle around £1,000 a month, and a premium tier above £5,000.

For context outside the UK, SE Ranking's 2024 survey of 260 agencies found European agencies (45% of them UK-based) price lower than North American ones: 39% charged under US$500 a month and only 9% over US$2,000.

What £500, £1,000 and £2,500 a month buy

SEO packages are sold by the month but delivered by the hour or day. The arithmetic below uses £85 an hour (close to Ahrefs' US$111 survey average) and £280 a day (the middle of Prospects' freelance range).

Monthly budgetAgency hours at £85/hFreelance days at £280/dayWhat realistically fits
£500about 6about 2Google Business Profile upkeep, a monthly Search Console check, one page improved
£1,000about 12about 3.5The above, plus two or three new or rewritten pages and some citation or review work
£2,500about 29about 9A steady content programme, technical fixes with your developer, link outreach, proper reporting
£5,000about 59about 18Close to a full-time person's month: multi-location, ecommerce or competitive national work

The "what fits" column is an illustration rather than a benchmark. A site migration or a messy technical problem can swallow a month on its own.

What this means in practice: under about £1,000 a month you're paying for maintenance and small improvements. That's fine for a local trade business with a decent site. It won't make a London law firm rank for "solicitors near me".

London vs Birmingham: what agencies charge per hour

We counted the hourly rates listed by every agency on page one of Clutch's London (2,411 companies listed in total) and Birmingham (1,343 companies) SEO directories on 19 October 2026. Clutch shows rates in US dollars; the caption gives the pound equivalents.

Source: our count of Clutch London and Clutch Birmingham listings, 19 October 2026
  • London's centre of gravity is US$100 to US$149 an hour (about £75 to £112). 45% of London agencies list that band, and another 26% list US$150 to US$199.
  • Birmingham is roughly one band cheaper. 34% of Birmingham agencies list US$50 to US$99 (about £38 to £74), against 21% in London.
  • London agencies want bigger projects. 62% of London listings that show a minimum project size set it at US$5,000 or more, against 51% in Birmingham.

Two caveats. Clutch's page one includes paid placements and favours agencies that collect reviews there, so this is a snapshot, not a census. And you don't have to hire in your own city: a Birmingham agency can do SEO for a London business. What it can't easily do is local link building in a city it doesn't know, which is why location still matters for local SEO.

A useful break-even: an in-house specialist on £40,000 costs about £3,770 a month with employer NI. At £85 an hour, that's roughly 44 agency hours. If you need less than that every month, buy hours; if you need more, hire and keep an outside consultant for audits.

Costs that don't show up on the first quote

  • VAT. UK agencies above the £90,000 VAT threshold must charge 20% VAT, and quotes are often shown ex VAT. A VAT-registered business reclaims it; a small business that isn't registered pays it in full.
  • Content. "Content included" can mean two 600-word posts a month or a full programme. Ask for the number of pages and who writes them.
  • Links. Ask how links are earned, whether any are paid, and for a list of every link placed. Paid links that pass ranking credit break Google's spam policies. Our guide to building backlinks explains what safe link building looks like.
  • Developer time. Agencies recommend technical fixes; someone has to implement them.
  • Minimum terms. Check the term first: some agencies ask clients to pay 6 to 12 months in advance, according to TJ Creative's guide. A three-month first term, then 30 days' notice, is a fair request.
  • Ownership. Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics and every page written for you should stay in your name, with the agency added as a user.

Local SEO in the UK: the free work to do first

For small UK businesses, local SEO is usually the quickest win, and much of it costs nothing. Google says local rankings depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there's no way to pay for a better local ranking.

How to check a UK SEO quote

  1. Check the company on Companies House: incorporation date, filing history, directors.
  2. Reject ranking guarantees. Google's own advice on hiring an SEO says "no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google".
  3. Get hours, deliverables and reporting in writing. "8 hours, of which 4 on content" is checkable. "Full SEO management" isn't.
  4. Give read-only access first. Google suggests granting only read access to Search Console while an SEO audits your site.
  5. Ask what happens when you leave: who keeps the content, links and accounts, and whether anything stops working.

Where software fits, and where Outrank fits

Software can't run your Google Business Profile or chase reviews, but it can take over the most expensive recurring part of SEO: keyword research, writing and publishing.

Outrank costs US$99 a month (about £74), or US$999 a year, as of October 2026. That covers 30 researched SEO articles a month published straight to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Wix and other platforms, keyword research with live volume and difficulty, and backlinks through Outrank's exchange network. It doesn't do local citations, technical fixes on your site or Google Business Profile management.

In Outrank's own results data, the median site reached 2.04× its pre-Outrank Google clicks after seven months, with the first three months slow. If you'd rather hand the whole thing over, Outrank Agency is the done-for-you option, with every article reviewed by human editors and SEO specialists.
