The best AI writer for SEO is the one that writes from search data, not only from your prompt. In October 2026 that means Outrank if you want articles researched, written and published to your site every day without touching them, Surfer or Frase if you want to steer and optimize each draft yourself, Koala or SEOwriting.ai for cheap, solid one-off articles, and HubSpot's AI blog writer if your blog already lives on HubSpot. ChatGPT and Claude write well, but they leave all the SEO work to you.
If you need more than a writer (rank tracking, audits, research), start with our roundup of the best AI SEO tools instead.
Below: the five things that separate an SEO writer from a text generator, a sortable comparison of ten tools with prices checked on each vendor's pricing page this month, and a short quiz if you'd rather be told which one fits.
Key takeaways
- An AI writer is "for SEO" only if it works from search data, meaning keyword volume and difficulty, the pages already ranking, and on-page rules. Most general writers use none of it.
- Entry prices run from $9 a month (ContentBot) to $99 (Outrank, Byword), and the gap is mostly about what happens before and after the writing.
- Two old favorites changed direction. Rytr now sells itself as a relationship manager, and Copy.ai became a go-to-market workflow platform owned by Fullcast.
- Edited beats raw. In Semrush's 2026 study, blog pages ranking
- In Outrank's 2,119-site study, the median site doubled its Google clicks by month 7, yet 24.4% of sites measured had fewer clicks than before. No writer guarantees rankings.
What makes an AI writer good for SEO?
Any model can produce 2,000 fluent words. Whether those words rank depends on five things the tool does around the writing:
- Keyword data in. The tool should start from a keyword with known volume and difficulty, ideally one it picked because your site can win it.
- A brief built from the live results. Headings, questions and entities the top pages cover, plus what they miss. Our content brief template shows the structure.
- Facts you can trust. Models invent numbers, prices and quotes. Google's generative AI guidance asks publishers to fact-check all of it, so a tool that cites sources saves editing time.
- On-page output. Title tag, meta description, a clean H2/H3 outline, internal links, FAQ and images with alt text.
- Publishing and cadence. A draft in a doc is not traffic. Direct publishing to your CMS is what keeps a content plan alive past week three.
Most tools in this list nail two or three of these. Very few do all five.

1. Outrank: best if you want SEO articles written and published for you
Outrank is an AI SEO agent, not a writing editor. You connect your site, it analyzes your niche and competitors, builds a 30-day plan with one keyword a day, then researches, writes and publishes one article daily to your CMS. Articles come with the title tag, meta description, H2/H3 structure, internal and external links, an FAQ, AI images and relevant YouTube embeds, and typically run 3,000 to 3,500 words.
The part no other writer here does: it also builds backlinks. Your site joins Outrank's exchange, where links to you are placed inside relevant new articles on other Outrank sites, with a guarantee of 15 verified backlinks a month (the median connected site gets 28).
Proof. On the open results page, the median site reaches 2.04× its pre-Outrank Google clicks after 7 months. In customer stories, the solo-founder site Life Purpose App went from 513 to 2,309 monthly clicks in a year with 450 articles, and the agency Bright Brands grew impressions 34× after testing on its own site before rolling out to clients.

Limits. It is not a rank tracker or a site auditor, it needs a CMS connection (or Outrank's free hosted blog) to publish, and the base plan is 30 articles a month. If you want to hand-edit every sentence against a content score, an editor like Surfer suits you better.
Price: $99/month or $999/year for 30 articles, keyword research, backlinks and all integrations; 60 and 90 articles a month cost +$85 and +$160. Three-day free trial (trial articles carry a watermark).
Pros
- Keyword research, writing, publishing and backlinks in one flat price
- Publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Wix, Framer, Notion, Ghost, Next.js and webhooks
- Unlimited users and 150+ languages
Cons
- No content score editor for line-by-line optimization
- Not a rank tracker or technical audit tool
- 30 articles a month on the base plan; more volume costs extra
2. Surfer: best for optimizing drafts against the SERP
Surfer is the best-known content optimization editor. It analyzes the pages ranking for your keyword, then scores your draft on topic coverage, terms, headings and structure as you write. Surfer AI writes full articles to the same spec, and since May 2026 AI-written and hand-written documents share one "Documents" allowance. Standard and higher plans include AI Tracker, which follows mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini.
The pricing page we saw (in euros) starts at €59 a month for Discovery (€49 billed yearly, 120 documents), with Standard at €119 and Pro at €219, plus a 7-day Pro trial that needs a card. It integrates with WordPress and Google Docs but not Webflow. Surfer is excellent when a writer wants line-by-line guidance; it doesn't publish on a schedule or build links. Positive Group acquired Surfer in October 2025. See Outrank vs Surfer.
3. Frase: best for research-heavy briefs and supervised automation
Frase started as the research-brief tool and is now an agent. It builds briefs from the results page, drafts articles, and auto-publishes once you switch that on for a content type. Its "Content Guard" audits and patches older pages, with your approval unless you opt out. It publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix, or to its own hosted FraseCMS, and tracks AI visibility (ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter, more engines on higher tiers).
Starter is $49/month ($39 billed yearly) for 10 articles, Professional $129 for 40 and Scale $299 for 100, with a 7-day trial and no card. Frase fits teams that want a research workbench and automation they supervise. It doesn't build backlinks. See Outrank vs Frase.
4. Koala AI: best value for one-off articles
Koala (KoalaWriter) writes long articles with SERP analysis of the pages ranking for your keyword, internal linking (KoalaLinks, from the Professional plan), AI images and one-click publishing to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and Ghost. Its keyword research runs through its own tooling and costs credits.
Pricing is by words, not articles: Starter is $25/month for 45,000 words, Professional $49 for 100,000, and plans scale up to $2,000. There's a free trial of 5,000 words. Koala is strong value if you already know which keywords to target. It won't plan a strategy or build links. Our Outrank vs Koala page covers the trade-off.
5. SEOwriting.ai: best for bulk articles on a budget
SEOwriting.ai generates articles with real-time search data, AI images and internal and external links (paid plans), and publishes to WordPress and Shopify. The free plan gives you three articles; Starter is $19/month ($14 billed yearly) for 50 articles, and Professional $79/month for 250. It's built for volume: good when you have a long keyword list and an editor, weak if you need the tool to tell you what to write.
6. Byword: best for bulk articles from your own keyword list
Byword is a bulk article writer: you supply keywords or titles, it generates articles at scale. Its pricing page lists Starter at $99/month for 25 articles, Standard at $299 for 80 and Scale at $999 for 300, and you can start free with 5 articles. Bring your own strategy; it's a production engine, not a planner. See Outrank vs Byword.
7. Writesonic: best if you also want AI search visibility tracking
Writesonic has moved its center of gravity to generative engine optimization: it tracks how often you appear in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, then suggests fixes. The article writer and site audits are still there. Starter is $79/month billed yearly with 15 AI articles; monthly self-serve billing starts at $99. Pick it if AI visibility is the main goal and articles are secondary.
8. Jasper: best for brand-controlled marketing copy
Jasper is a marketing platform for teams: brand voices, knowledge assets, audiences, agents and a GEO hub, with Semrush data feeding its optimization agent. It's strong for on-brand copy across channels. For SEO it leaves keyword strategy, CMS publishing and links to you, and the old Surfer integration no longer appears on its integrations page. Pro is $69 per seat per month ($59 billed yearly); Business is custom. See Outrank vs Jasper.
9. HubSpot AI blog writer: best if your blog runs on HubSpot
HubSpot's AI blog writer lets you pick a topic and SEO keyword, choose a title with Semrush metrics, edit the outline, then generate a draft with a featured image in your brand voice. Basic AI drafting is free in HubSpot, but full blog post generation needs Content Hub Professional or Enterprise, and it publishes only to the HubSpot CMS. A Breeze content agent (Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, paid in HubSpot credits) can draft posts too, but it doesn't publish them.
10. ContentBot: best for cheap drafting
ContentBot is still going with a blog writer that adds internal and external links, bulk imports, a humanizer and "Flows" automations. Starter is $9/month for 50,000 words; there's also a pay-as-you-go option. Its site doesn't highlight SERP analysis or keyword planning, so treat it as a drafting assistant for someone who already does the SEO.
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: when a general model is enough
General models write some of the best prose on this list, and all three have free tiers. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, Claude Pro $20 ($17 billed yearly) and Google AI Pro, which includes Gemini, $19.99 (US prices, October 2026). What they don't have is search data: no keyword volumes, no view of the current results, no publishing.
A general model is enough when you publish a few posts a month, already have keyword data from Search Console or an SEO suite, and are willing to feed it the research. Give it everything a generator would have built for you:
Write a blog post targeting the keyword: [keyword] ([volume] searches/month).
Search intent: [what the searcher wants to do or decide].
The top 5 results cover these headings: [paste headings].
They miss: [the gap you will fill].
Facts to use (do not invent others): [your numbers, sources, examples].
Link internally to: [3–5 of your URLs with anchor text].
Write for [audience]. Answer the query in the first two sentences.
Output: title tag under 60 characters, meta description under 155, H2/H3 outline, then the article. That prompt closes most of the gap on the writing side. It does not close the gap on volume, publishing and links, which is where dedicated tools earn their fee.
HubSpot AI content writer vs Writesonic vs Rytr vs ContentBot: ranked for SEO texts
This comparison comes up a lot, so here is a straight ranking for one job: producing SEO-optimized blog content in 2026.
- Writesonic. The most SEO features of the four: an article writer, site audits and AI visibility tracking that works for any site. The best choice unless you're on HubSpot.
- HubSpot AI blog writer. Keyword-led drafts with Semrush metrics and brand voice, but full generation needs Content Hub Professional and it publishes only to HubSpot. First place if your blog is already there.
- ContentBot. Cheap and capable for drafting with links, but its site doesn't highlight SERP analysis or keyword planning. You do the SEO.
- Rytr. Its homepage now sells an AI relationship manager and follow-up assistant; writing is a side product with no SEO features. Fine for a quick paragraph, last for SEO.
Does AI-written content rank?
It can, and plenty does. Ahrefs found that 86.5% of pages ranking in Google's top 20 contain at least some AI-generated content. Google's spam policies target scaled pages made mainly to manipulate rankings, not AI as such.
The top spot is harder. Semrush's 2026 study found a clear human edge at #1:
Who wrote the blog pages ranking
Human-written
80.5%
AI-generated
10%
The practical reading: use an AI writer for research, structure and the first draft, then add what only you have. That means real examples, your own numbers, screenshots and opinions; our SEO content writing tips cover that editing pass. FAQ
What is the best AI writer for SEO?
For hands-off SEO, Outrank: it picks keywords, writes, publishes daily and builds backlinks for $99 a month. For writers who want to optimize every draft, Surfer or Frase. For cheap articles from your own keyword list, Koala or SEOwriting.ai. The right answer depends on whether you want a tool or a pipeline.
What are the top-rated AI article writers for SEO ranking?
The AI writers built specifically for ranking are Outrank, Surfer, Frase, Koala and SEOwriting.ai, because they work from keyword and SERP data. General models like ChatGPT and Claude can match the prose but don't research the search results for you. Ratings matter less than a trial: run the same three keywords through two tools and compare.
Is there a free AI writer for SEO?
There are free tiers but no complete free tool. SEOwriting.ai includes three free articles, RightBlogger and Rytr have free plans with word limits, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have free tiers for drafting. Google Search Console is free for finding keywords you already rank for.
Can AI write SEO content that ranks on Google?
Yes. Google ranks helpful content however it is produced and targets only scaled pages made mainly to manipulate rankings. AI-assisted content ranks widely, but Semrush found #1 positions go far more often to human-written pages, so edit AI drafts and add first-hand detail.
Is Copy.ai still good for SEO?
Copy.ai is no longer an SEO writer. It has become a go-to-market workflow platform for sales and marketing teams, owned by Fullcast, with plans from $29 a month for chat up to enterprise workflow tiers. For SEO articles, use a tool built on keyword and SERP data.
How much does an AI writer for SEO cost?
Between $9 and $99 a month for most entry plans in October 2026: ContentBot from $9, SEOwriting.ai from $19, Koala from $25, Frase from $49, Jasper $69 per seat, and Outrank, Byword or Writesonic (billed monthly) at $99. Tools that publish and build links for you sit at the top of that range because they replace more work.
