On WordPress, the right AdSense alternative depends on your traffic, exactly as on any other platform: Journey by Mediavine from 1,000 tier 1 sessions a month, Monumetric from 10,000 page views, Raptive from 25,000 page views, Mediavine once you earn $5,000 a year from ads, and Ezoic from 250,000 monthly users. What WordPress changes is the setup. Most of these networks have an official plugin (Grow for WordPress, Mediavine Control Panel, Raptive Ads, Ezoic), and the classic way to break your ads is a caching plugin that delays or minifies their scripts.

This guide covers both: which network to pick, how to install each one on WordPress step by step, and the WP Rocket and Cloudflare settings that keep ads loading.

Key takeaways

  • Use the network's official plugin when one exists. Journey (Grow for WordPress), Mediavine (Mediavine Control Panel), Raptive (Raptive Ads) and Ezoic all have one on WordPress.org.
  • For networks without a plugin, one general ad manager is enough. Ad Inserter and Advanced Ads are free, with Pro versions from €20 and €59 a year.
  • WP Rocket 3.10.1 and later excludes Mediavine's ad script automatically. You still add "mediavine-create" and "grow" to its exclusion fields if you use Create or Grow.
  • Ezoic now recommends JavaScript integration (which its WordPress plugin installs) over name server changes, and says third-party speed plugins can run alongside it.
  • Run only one copy of any ad script. Two Mediavine script wrappers, or AdSense left in place under an exclusive network, cause most WordPress ad problems.

Requirements are from each network's site on October 19, 2026. For the reasoning behind each tier, including the low-traffic options, see our main AdSense alternatives guide.

How to install each network on WordPress

Google AdSense

The simplest route is Site Kit by Google, Google's official plugin: it connects your AdSense account and adds the AdSense snippet to your site, and it also brings Analytics and Search Console data into your dashboard. If you prefer, paste the Auto ads code into your header with WPCode (formerly Insert Headers and Footers). For manual ad units in specific spots, use Ad Inserter or Advanced Ads instead of editing theme files.

Journey by Mediavine

  1. Create a free Grow account and install the Grow for WordPress plugin.
  2. Leave Grow running for at least 30 days. Mediavine uses it to measure your traffic, and running Grow is a requirement for Journey ads.
  3. Apply for Journey once you have 1,000 sessions from tier 1 countries in 30 days. Journey ads are then switched on through the same Grow plugin, which also integrates Journey ad slots with Create by Mediavine and the Trellis theme framework.

Mediavine

Install the free Mediavine Control Panel (MCP) plugin. According to Mediavine's overview, it does three things:

  1. Connects your site: paste your Site ID, found in the Mediavine dashboard under Settings → Ad Setup.
  2. Installs the script wrapper: tick "Include Script Wrapper" and it stays updated automatically.
  3. Blocks insecure assets: a Content Security Policy that keeps ads loading cleanly over HTTPS.

Then remove any other copy of the script wrapper, for example one added through your theme or a header plugin. Mediavine is explicit: one script wrapper is great, two are not. Remove AdSense and any other programmatic ads too, since Mediavine requires exclusivity.

Raptive

Raptive has an official plugin, Raptive Ads, which adds Raptive's JavaScript tag and a few settings. Install it, then set your Site ID under Raptive → Ads. Many older guides say Raptive has no plugin; that is out of date.

Ezoic

Install the Ezoic plugin, go to Settings → Ezoic, and click Enable JavaScript Integration, per Ezoic's WordPress guide. Use the Ad Placements tab to choose where placeholders go, and turn on automatic ads.txt management. Clear your caching plugin afterwards so the scripts appear. Ezoic says its system typically learns and optimizes within two to three weeks.

Monumetric

Monumetric's FAQ says its team installs and tests the tags for about 95% of publishers, using a temporary login to your WordPress admin. Create a separate administrator account for them and delete it once ads are live.

Media.net, Adsterra, Carbon and direct ads

These give you ad code to paste. Use one ad manager plugin:

  • Ad Inserter: free, with automatic insertion before or after content, between paragraphs and in widgets. Pro starts at €20 a year for one site.
  • Advanced Ads: free, with placements, ad rotation and conditions. Pro is €59 a year for one site.
  • WPCode: free, for header and footer snippets such as an ads.txt verification or a network's main script.

If you sell placements yourself, Advanced Ads Pro and Ad Inserter Pro both handle scheduling and rotation. Our guide to selling ad space on your website covers pricing.

Caching and speed plugins: settings that keep ads working

Most WordPress ad problems come from performance plugins changing how scripts load.

WP Rocket and Mediavine. Mediavine's WP Rocket guide says WP Rocket 3.10.1 and above excludes its ad script automatically. If you use Create by Mediavine, add mediavine-create to the Excluded CSS Files and every Excluded JavaScript Files field in File Optimization. If you use Grow, add grow to the Excluded JavaScript Files fields. Save, then clear every cache.

WP Rocket and other networks. WP Rocket's Delay JavaScript execution feature has one-click exclusions for common plugins and services from version 3.13 (WP Rocket docs). If ads load late or not at all, exclude the network's main script there first.

Cloudflare Rocket Loader. Mediavine lists a known conflict between Rocket Loader and its ads in its conflicts section. Turn Rocket Loader off if ads misbehave.

Ezoic. With JavaScript integration, Ezoic says you can keep using third-party optimizers such as WP Rocket, Perfmatters and Cloudflare, and should clear their caches after enabling the plugin. Its own caching only applies to Cloud (name server or Cloudflare) integration, in which case it recommends disabling other caching plugins.

Page builders and sticky elements. Mediavine has a help article on why post and page builders can be bad for ad performance, and another on social sharing bars that collide with its sticky footer ad. Keep article templates simple and check mobile pages after launch.

Install one network plugin and, at most, one general ad manager. Every extra script adds load time, and slower pages lose both readers and ad viewability.

Does switching ad networks hurt WordPress SEO?

Not directly. Ads do not change your rankings, but heavy ad scripts can slow pages and shift layouts, and both hurt user experience. Measure Core Web Vitals in PageSpeed Insights or Search Console before and after the switch, and fix script loading before you add more ad slots. Our article on whether page speed affects AI search covers what speed does and doesn't change.

The part no plugin fixes: traffic

Every threshold in the first table is a traffic or revenue number, and every network pays per impression. More articles that rank means more page views on whichever network you use. Outrank publishes a researched SEO article to your WordPress site every day through its WordPress plugin or the REST API, with images, internal links and an FAQ, and builds backlinks through its exchange; see the integrations page for setup. FAQ

What is the best AdSense alternative for a WordPress blog?

It depends on your traffic. Journey by Mediavine is the best option from 1,000 tier 1 sessions a month and installs through the Grow for WordPress plugin. Raptive (25,000+ page views) and Mediavine ($5,000+ a year in ad revenue) usually pay more once you qualify, and both have official WordPress plugins.

Can I use Mediavine and AdSense at the same time on WordPress?

No. Mediavine requires exclusivity over programmatic ads, so you remove AdSense and any other network whose setup needs ads.txt lines. Affiliate links and directly sold sponsorships can stay.

Does Raptive have a WordPress plugin?

Yes. Raptive's official plugin is called Raptive Ads on WordPress.org. It adds Raptive's JavaScript tag to your site, and you enter your Site ID under Raptive → Ads in the WordPress dashboard.

How do I add Ezoic to WordPress?

Install the Ezoic plugin from WordPress.org, open Settings → Ezoic and click Enable JavaScript Integration. Then choose ad placements in the Ad Placements tab, enable automatic ads.txt management and clear any caching plugin. Note that new sites need 250,000 monthly active users or an Incubator acceptance to monetize with Ezoic.

What is the best free ad plugin for WordPress?

Ad Inserter and Advanced Ads are the two most complete free ad managers. Both insert ad code before, inside or after posts and in widgets, with device and page conditions. Use them for networks without an official plugin, such as Media.net or Adsterra, and for your own direct ads.

Will ads slow down my WordPress site?

They add scripts, so some slowdown is normal. Keep it small by running one ad network, excluding its scripts from JavaScript delay only when ads break, turning off Cloudflare Rocket Loader if it conflicts, and checking PageSpeed Insights before and after each change.
