Wix SEO is the set of settings and habits that get a Wix website found on Google: connecting Search Console through the SEO Setup Checklist, writing a unique title, meta description and URL for every page, adding structured data in the Advanced SEO tab, and then publishing content people search for. Wix handles the technical basics (sitemap, SSL, mobile layout, canonical tags) automatically, so most of your effort goes into pages and content.

And yes, Wix sites rank. In our study of Search Console data, 92% of the Wix sites publishing with Outrank grew their Google clicks. This guide walks through every Wix SEO setting in the order to set it, then covers keywords, the blog, local SEO and the tools worth adding.

Key takeaways

  • Start with the SEO Setup Checklist: it connects Google Search Console and submits your sitemap from inside Wix, in a few minutes.
  • Every page needs its own title tag (about 50–60 characters), meta description and short URL slug. Set them per page or with SEO Settings patterns.
  • The Advanced SEO tab is where you add JSON-LD structured data, custom meta tags and noindex rules; the robots.txt editor and URL Redirect Manager sit under SEO & GEO → Tools and settings.
  • Wix is fast: 80.9% of Wix sites passed Core Web Vitals on mobile in September 2026, against 48.3% of WordPress sites (HTTP Archive).
  • In our data, 48 Wix sites went from a median 80 to 661 Google clicks per 28 days after they started publishing articles regularly.

Is Wix good for SEO?

Wix is good for SEO for small business, local and portfolio sites. Its old reputation (JavaScript-heavy pages, ugly URLs with #!) dates from a decade ago and no longer applies: today's Wix serves crawlable pages, lets you edit every title, description and URL slug, and includes a robots.txt editor, a redirect manager and a structured data field on every page.

Its limits are about control rather than ranking ability. You can't install server-side plugins, you have less say over the code and scripts loaded on each page, and leaving Wix means rebuilding the site. For a large content site or a complex store, WordPress or Shopify give you more room (our best CMS for SEO comparison covers the trade-offs). For a 10-to-200-page business site, Wix's ceiling is rarely the problem.

Our own numbers back that up. Wix is one of the platforms Outrank publishes to, and in our AI SEO agent study of Search Console data the Wix group did best of all:

Those Wix sites started small, which makes big multiples easier, and the data is observational, not a controlled test. The useful conclusion is narrower and still important: a Wix site that publishes helpful pages consistently is not held back by being on Wix.

How to do SEO on Wix: the setup, step by step

Work through these in order. The first group takes an afternoon; the rest is ongoing.

Step 1: Run the Wix SEO Setup Checklist

The SEO Setup Checklist (the tool once called SEO Wiz) is the fastest way to get the basics right. Wix's SEO tools now live in the SEO & GEO section of your dashboard (it used to be called Marketing & SEO), and the checklist is under Tools and settings. It builds a plan from a few questions about your business, walks you through your homepage title and description, and connects your site to Google Search Console with a Connect to Google button. You need a Premium plan and a connected domain for that step. Once connected, Wix submits your sitemap to Google automatically, which saves the manual steps in our guide on how to make a sitemap.

Don't stop there. The checklist covers your homepage and a few key pages; every other page still needs its own settings.

Step 2: Set the SEO basics on every page

In the Editor, open Pages & Menu (just Pages in Wix Studio), click More Actions next to a page and choose SEO basics. You'll find:

  • Title tag: the blue link in Google. Lead with the main keyword and keep it around 50–60 characters so it isn't cut off. Wix's Create AI Text button suggests options if you're stuck.
  • Meta description: the snippet under the link. Google often rewrites it, but a clear 140–155-character summary still earns clicks when it's used.
  • URL slug: keep it short and descriptive, like /emergency-plumber-austin rather than /copy-of-services-2.
  • Let search engines index this page: leave it on for pages you want in Google; switch it off for thank-you pages, test pages and duplicates.

Step 3: Use SEO Settings patterns for page types

Blog posts, products, events and other dynamic pages are created in bulk, so set their defaults once. Go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Settings, choose Edit by page type and open the Customize defaults tab. Wix calls these defaults patterns: for example, a blog post title tag built from the post title variable followed by your site name. Each new item inherits the pattern, and you can still override any single page.

The same page types let you change the URL structure of blog posts (/post/) and store products (/product-page/), including the prefix, though Wix says the blog prefix usually can't be removed entirely. When you change it, Wix redirects the old URLs automatically by default.

Wix Advanced SEO settings

The Advanced SEO tab sits next to SEO basics in each page's settings. Three things live there:

  1. Structured data markup. Paste JSON-LD here to describe the page to search engines. Wix adds some markup automatically for products, blog posts and events; for your main pages, add your own. A local business homepage, for example:
json
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Plumber",
  "name": "Example Plumbing Co.",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/",
  "telephone": "+1-512-555-0142",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "1200 Example St",
    "addressLocality": "Austin",
    "addressRegion": "TX",
    "postalCode": "78701",
    "addressCountry": "US"
  },
  "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 08:00-18:00"
}

Test it with Google's Rich Results Test before you publish. Our guide to schema markup on Wix has more templates.

  1. Additional tags. Custom <meta> and <link> tags for the page. This is also where you change the canonical tag, which Wix sets to the page itself by default.

  2. Robots meta tag. Beyond noindex, you can tell search engines not to follow links (nofollow), not to show a snippet (nosnippet), or not to index the page's images. You can set these in bulk per page type in SEO Settings.

Most small sites never need more than structured data from this tab. Use it deliberately: a wrong robots tag on the wrong page removes that page from Google.

Wix SEO tools: what's built in and what to add

Wix's built-in SEO tools live under SEO & GEO → Tools and settings (bot reports sit under Analytics → SEO reports):

Free tools that fill the gaps:

  • Google Search Console: the queries you rank for, your average position and indexing problems. The single most useful SEO tool for any Wix site.
  • PageSpeed Insights: Core Web Vitals for any page, with real-user data when your site has enough traffic.
  • Google Business Profile: essential for local searches and the map pack.
  • Keyword tools: Google Keyword Planner is free with a Google Ads account; paid suites like Semrush and Ahrefs show competitor keywords. Our list of the best SEO tools for small businesses compares them.

Wix SEO keywords: how to choose and use them

Wix has no "meta keywords" field, and you don't need one: Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for years. Keywords matter in the places people and Google actually read.

Finding them. Start with how your customers phrase the problem, not your industry jargon. Type your service into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions and the "People also ask" questions. Once your site has some impressions, Search Console's Performance report shows the exact queries you already appear for. Long, specific searches ("wedding photographer for small ceremonies", "emergency plumber open sunday austin") are easier to rank for than broad ones. Our guide to finding low-competition keywords shows the process.

Placing them. One main keyword per page, used:

  • at the start of the title tag
  • in the H1 (the page's main heading)
  • in the URL slug
  • in the first paragraph
  • in at least one subheading and one image's alt text, where it reads naturally

Two pages targeting the same keyword compete with each other. Give each page its own topic.

Technical SEO on Wix

Wix takes care of most technical SEO without any setting:

  • Sitemap: generated at /sitemap.xml (an index of separate sitemaps for pages, posts, products and so on) and updated as you make changes.
  • IndexNow: on Premium sites, Wix automatically notifies Bing and the other IndexNow search engines when pages are added, updated or deleted.
  • SSL: included free on connected domains, so pages load over https.
  • Canonical tags: added automatically so duplicate versions of a page point to one URL.
  • Multilingual: with Wix Multilingual, hreflang tags are added for each language version.
  • Mobile: every site has a mobile layout. Check it in the Editor's mobile view, because elements you add on desktop can stack awkwardly.
  • Images: Wix optimizes the images you upload. Upload reasonably sized originals anyway (a 6,000-pixel photo for a 600-pixel slot still costs load time).

Speed is a strength. In the HTTP Archive's Core Web Vitals Technology Report, 80.9% of Wix sites passed Core Web Vitals on mobile in September 2026, compared with 48.3% of WordPress sites and 71.0% of Squarespace sites (based on real-user Chrome data).

What you control is page weight. Each extra app, animation, embedded video or font adds requests. Run your most important pages through PageSpeed Insights, and if the mobile score is poor, remove the heaviest elements first.

Two technical tasks are worth a calendar reminder:

  1. Redirects after every change. When you rename a page's URL or delete a page, add a 301 redirect from the old URL in the URL Redirect Manager. It keeps the rankings and links the old page had.
  2. Monthly index check. Open Site Inspection or Search Console's Indexing → Pages report and look for pages that aren't indexed. A page Google skipped is usually thin, duplicated or poorly linked, and the fix is in the content, not a setting.

Wix blog SEO

For most Wix sites, the blog is where SEO traffic grows. Service pages capture people ready to buy; articles reach the people still researching ("how much does a bathroom remodel cost", "how to choose a wedding photographer").

To make Wix blog posts rank:

  • Write each post around one search query, and answer it in the first paragraph.
  • Set the title, description and slug in the post's SEO settings before publishing. Change the slug before publishing, not after.
  • Link every new post to a relevant service page and to two or three related posts.
  • Use categories to group posts by topic, and keep the number of categories small.
  • Publish on a schedule. Across all platforms in our data, sites publishing 30 or more articles a month grew a median 2.27× in clicks, against 1.07× for those publishing fewer than 5 (Outrank results).

Consistency is the hard part for a small team. Outrank connects to the Wix Blog and publishes a researched, SEO-ready article every day, with internal links, images and an FAQ, so the blog keeps growing while you run the business.

Local SEO on Wix

If your customers are nearby, local SEO is where Wix sites win fastest:

  • Google Business Profile. Claim and complete it: categories, services, hours, photos, and a link to the matching page on your site.
  • Consistent NAP. Your business name, address and phone number should be identical on your site (usually the footer and contact page), your profile and directories.
  • LocalBusiness structured data on the homepage or contact page, using the Advanced SEO tab as shown above.
  • One page per service and per area you genuinely serve, each with unique content. A page that only swaps the city name is a doorway page and won't hold rankings.
  • Reviews. Ask every happy customer, reply to every review, and never offer incentives for positive ones.

Where to get Wix SEO help

When you're stuck on a specific setting, the Wix Help Center has step-by-step articles for each SEO tool, and Wix's own SEO Hub publishes guides written by SEO practitioners. For hands-on help, the Wix Marketplace lists designers and SEO professionals you can hire. For the strategy side (which keywords, which pages, what to write), Search Console data plus the steps above will take a small business further than most paid audits.

FAQ

Is Wix good for SEO?

Yes. Wix gives you control over titles, meta descriptions, URL slugs, structured data, robots.txt and redirects, and it handles sitemaps, SSL and mobile layouts automatically. It's a strong choice for small business, local and portfolio sites; very large content sites or complex stores get more flexibility from WordPress or Shopify.

How do I improve SEO on my Wix site?

Complete the SEO Setup Checklist to connect Google Search Console, give every page a unique title, description and URL, add structured data in the Advanced SEO tab, and fix pages Search Console reports as not indexed. Then publish helpful pages and blog posts for the specific searches your customers make, and earn reviews and local links.

What are Wix Advanced SEO settings?

Advanced SEO is a tab in each page's SEO settings where you add structured data (JSON-LD), custom meta tags and robots meta instructions such as noindex or nofollow. Site-wide equivalents, like patterns for every blog post or product page, are in SEO Settings under SEO & GEO → Tools and settings.

Does Wix have SEO tools?

Yes. Wix includes the SEO Setup Checklist, the SEO Assistant, SEO Settings patterns, a URL Redirect Manager, a robots.txt editor, Site Inspection (Google index status per page) and bot log reports. Add Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and Google Business Profile, which are free.

How do I add keywords to my Wix site?

Wix has no meta keywords field because Google doesn't use that tag. Add your main keyword to the page's title tag, H1 heading, URL slug and first paragraph, and use related phrases in subheadings and image alt text where they read naturally. Target one main keyword per page.

How long does SEO take on Wix?

Expect the first movement in 1 to 3 months and meaningful traffic after 6 months or more, depending on competition and how often you publish. Across the 2,119 Outrank customer sites in our study (all platforms), median clicks were up 27% after about three months and roughly doubled by month seven.

Can I use Yoast SEO on Wix?

No. Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin and doesn't run on Wix. Wix's built-in SEO Setup Checklist, SEO Settings and Advanced SEO tab cover the same ground: titles, descriptions, sitemaps, structured data and indexing controls.
