You can do a useful SEO competitor analysis in 30 minutes if you limit it to one competitor and four questions: who are they, how strong are they, where do they beat you, and what will you do about it. Spend 5 minutes picking the competitor from the search results, 10 minutes sizing up their authority and top pages, 10 minutes finding keyword and backlink gaps, and the last 5 writing three actions.

This page is the quick version, built for a Monday morning or the half hour before a client call. Every step works with free tools, and there's a table with the matching reports in SE Ranking, Semrush and Ahrefs if you have one of them. For the complete process, see our 7-step SEO competitor analysis.

Key takeaways

  • Audit one competitor per run. Three quick audits beat one sprawling analysis nobody finishes.
  • Pick the competitor from Google's results for your money keywords, not from your list of business rivals.
  • Free tools are enough for the 30-minute version, including Semrush's 10 free reports a day and Outrank's free competitor and backlink tools.
  • In SE Ranking, the whole audit fits in Competitive Research plus the Backlink Checker, available on the Core plan ($129 a month as of October 2026, with a 14-day free trial).
  • Stop at three actions, one page to upgrade, one page to create and one link target.

What you need before you start

  • 5 to 10 money keywords. The searches that bring customers, not just traffic. If you have Search Console, take them from Performance → Search results → Queries, filtered to non-branded queries.
  • A blank sheet with columns for the competitor's domain, authority, referring domains, traffic trend, top pages, gaps and actions.
  • One toolset, used for every number. Either the free set below, or one paid suite. Mixing tools makes the estimates incomparable, since even Ahrefs' own test found its traffic estimates deviate from Search Console data by a median of 49.52%.

The 30-minute SEO competitor audit

The 30-minute SEO competitor audit in four timed blocks: pick the competitor (0 to 5 minutes), size them up (5 to 15), find the gaps (15 to 25) and decide on three actions (25 to 30)

Minutes 0 to 5: pick the competitor

Search your money keywords in a private window and note the domains on page one. The one that shows up most is your competitor for this run, even if it's a blog, a directory or a review site rather than a company you sell against. For a second opinion, the free SEO Competitor Finder in Outrank's SEO tools lists the sites that share the most rankings with a domain.

A quick sanity check: run site:theirdomain.com in Google to get a rough sense of how many pages they have indexed. Fifty pages and five thousand pages call for different strategies.

Minutes 5 to 15: size them up

Note four things for them and for you:

  1. Authority: Domain Rating (Ahrefs), Authority Score (Semrush), Domain Trust (SE Ranking) or Domain Authority (Moz). Use the free Ahrefs SEO Toolbar or a free Semrush report.
  2. Referring domains: the number of unique sites linking to them.
  3. Traffic trend: up, flat or down over 12 months. The direction matters more than the number.
  4. Top 10 pages: the URLs earning most of their organic traffic, and what kind of page each one is.

Outrank's free SEO competitor analysis tool puts their domain and yours side by side with the traffic and authority gap, and the free content analyzer lists a competitor's top pages and topic clusters. Neither needs an account.

Minutes 15 to 25: find the gaps

Two keyword lists matter:

  • Missing: keywords they rank for in the top 10 where you don't rank at all. These become new pages.
  • Weak: keywords where you sit on page two and they're in the top 5. These become refreshes.

If the missing list is long, our competitor keyword analysis guide shows how to filter it, and the keyword competition check tells you which ones are realistic.

Then look at their three most linked pages. If all three are tools, statistics pages or templates, that's how they earn authority, and that's the asset you'd need to build. The free Backlink Checker in Outrank's SEO tools shows who links to any domain.

Minutes 25 to 30: write three actions

Write exactly three:

  1. Upgrade: your page closest to page one, with the competitor page you need to beat and what it does better.
  2. Create: the missing keyword with the most commercial value that you can realistically rank for.
  3. Link: one site that links to them (and covers your topic) to pitch, or one asset to build.

Three actions get done. Twenty get filed.

Running the audit in SE Ranking, Semrush or Ahrefs

If you pay for one suite, the same audit takes the same 30 minutes with less copy-pasting. These are the reports to open for each step.

SE Ranking competitor analysis: what you get

SE Ranking's competitor analysis lives in Competitive Research. Enter a competitor's domain or a single URL and click Analyze. The overview shows Domain Trust and Page Trust, estimated monthly organic and paid traffic, ranking keywords and traffic cost. The Organic Traffic Research section lists the keywords sending them visitors, with volume, difficulty, position and intent, and you can filter to keywords that trigger AI Overviews. For the keyword gap, the Competitor Comparison tab compares your site with up to two competitors, and its "Missing" tab lists the keywords they rank for that you don't.

On pricing, SE Ranking's Core plan costs $129 a month (or $103.20 a month billed annually) as of October 2026 and lists unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research, with a 14-day free trial that needs no credit card. That makes it the cheapest of the three suites for this audit: Semrush's SEO plan is $139 a month and Ahrefs' Lite plan $129, with Ahrefs' $29 Starter plan covering lighter lookups. Prices are from each vendor's pricing page in October 2026.

Is it as good as Semrush or Ahrefs? For a 30-minute audit, the differences rarely change your three actions. The bigger suites have larger link and keyword databases and more reports, which start to matter in the full 7-step analysis. For a broader comparison, see our guides to cheaper Semrush alternatives and Ahrefs alternatives.

How to read what you found

The gaps usually point to one of three situations, and each has a different fix:

What you seeWhat it meansFirst move
You rank 11 to 20 for keywords where they're top 5, and your authority is similarTheir pages answer betterRefresh your page against theirs: intent, depth, freshness, internal links
They rank with a page type you don't have (tools, templates, comparisons)Structural gapBuild that page type for your best keyword, then expand
Their pages aren't better, but they have several times your referring domainsAuthority gapBuild or promote one linkable asset; pitch sites in their link profile

If the competitor wins with free tools, you're not imagining it: in Outrank's study of 6.2 million pages, free tools and calculators earned 2.11 times the click-through rate of the same site's articles at positions 4 to 10.

When 30 minutes isn't enough

The quick audit tells you what to do this week. It won't give you share of voice across a full keyword set, a page-by-page content comparison or a proper backlink gap. Run the full analysis when:

  • you're planning a quarter of content, not a week,
  • a new competitor has taken several of your positions,
  • you're pitching SEO to a client and need a competitor analysis report.

For the non-SEO side of a rival's site (pricing, conversion path, traffic by channel), use the competitor website analysis guide. And if your three actions keep turning into thirty, Outrank handles the volume: it researches keywords with live difficulty, publishes an SEO article a day to your CMS and builds backlinks through its exchange.

FAQ

How long does an SEO competitor analysis take?

A focused audit of one competitor takes about 30 minutes with the checklist above. A full analysis of 3 to 5 competitors, with share of voice, content comparisons, backlink gaps and a written report, usually takes one to three days. Most teams run the full version quarterly and quick audits in between.

Can I do an SEO competitor analysis for free?

Yes. Google's results show who you compete with, a free Semrush account gives 10 reports a day, Similarweb's free lookup gives traffic estimates, and Outrank's free SEO competitor analysis tool, content analyzer and backlink checker cover keyword gaps, top pages and links. Free tools have lower limits, but they're enough for one competitor at a time.

Is SE Ranking good for competitor analysis?

SE Ranking covers the core of an SEO competitor analysis: traffic and keyword estimates in Competitive Research, a keyword gap through Competitor Comparison (up to two competitors at a time) and a separate Backlink Checker. At $129 a month for the Core plan as of October 2026, it's cheaper than Semrush's SEO plan. Semrush and Ahrefs offer larger databases and more reports for deeper analysis.

Look up their referring domains and sort their pages by the number of linking domains to see which assets earn links. Then check who links to those pages and whether those sites cover your topic. Ahrefs' Link Intersect, or any backlink checker run on two or three competitors, shows sites that link to several of them but not to you.

What is the step-by-step process for SEO competitor analysis?

Pick your keywords and find who ranks for them, profile each competitor's authority, traffic and top pages, run a keyword gap, compare their best pages with yours, analyze their backlinks, then turn the findings into a short list of prioritized actions. The 30-minute audit compresses this to one competitor and three actions; the 7-step guide covers the full version.
