To rank on Google page 1 in Malaysia, target the way Malaysians actually search, which is often a Malay noun with English or local modifiers ("bengkel kereta near me buka sekarang"), build a separate page for each language your customers use, make it obvious your business is Malaysian (address, +60 phone, prices in RM, SSM number, ideally a .my domain), complete your Google Business Profile, and earn links from Malaysian websites. Then give it three to six months.
The general ranking process is the same everywhere (covered in our guide on how to rank on Google). This page is about what's different in Malaysia, backed by data we pulled for it: Google autocomplete suggestions for Malaysian users, StatCounter search share, and DataReportal's 2026 country figures, plus a checklist you can work through.
Key takeaways
- Google handled 91.2% of searches in Malaysia in September 2026, Bing 5.7% and Yahoo 2.0% (StatCounter). Page 1 in Malaysia means page 1 on Google.
- Malaysia had 35.4 million internet users in late 2025, 98.0% of the population (DataReportal 2026).
- Malaysian searches mix languages: autocomplete suggests "klinik gigi murah near me" and "servis aircond rumah berapa kali setahun". English-only keyword lists miss them.
- AI Overviews are available in Malaysia, in Malay as well as English (Google). Clear answers in each language matter for both.
- Small, specific keywords win: the median keyword Outrank targets for its customers has a difficulty of 14 out of 100.
How Malaysians search: the numbers
Google dominates search in Malaysia. Here's the share of searches by engine in September 2026:
Search engine market share in Malaysia, September 2026
Google
91.2%
Bing
5.7%
Yahoo!
2.0%
Yandex
0.7%
DuckDuckGo
0.4%
Google's share has stayed between about 91% and 94% every month since September 2025, while Bing has crept up from 3.8% to 5.7% over the same period. Bing is worth five minutes (verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools), not a separate strategy.
A few more numbers that shape the playbook, from DataReportal's Digital 2026: Malaysia:
- 35.4 million internet users in late 2025, a 98.0% penetration rate.
- 30.7 million social media user identities, 85.0% of the population.
- YouTube's ad reach was 23.6 million, 65.4% of the population, so video results are worth targeting for how-to searches.
- Median mobile download speed of 143.56 Mbps, so heavy pages are less of a problem than in many markets, but Core Web Vitals still count.
One surprise worth knowing: StatCounter's page-view data shows desktop ahead of mobile in Malaysia in most months of the past year (52.1% desktop vs 46.3% mobile in September 2026, StatCounter). That's measured across sites using its tracker, so check your own split in Google Analytics before assuming "everyone is on a phone". Google indexes the mobile version of your site either way.
Malaysia is also multilingual. About 22.2% of the population is ethnically Chinese and 6.5% Indian (DOSM, Q2 2025), and many people move between Malay, English and Chinese, sometimes inside a single search.
Keyword research for Malaysia: what autocomplete shows
We pulled Google's autocomplete suggestions for Malaysian users (country set to Malaysia) on October 19, 2026. Autocomplete reflects real, common searches, though it doesn't show volume. Three patterns stand out.

| Seed you type | Suggestions Google showed (selection) | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| bengkel kereta (car workshop) | bengkel kereta near me, … terdekat, … near me buka sekarang, … 24 jam near me, … putrajaya, … gombak | Malay service word, English "near me", urgency ("open now", "24 hours") and towns |
| klinik gigi (dental clinic) | klinik gigi near me, … kerajaan near me, … murah near me, … 24 jam | Government vs private and price ("murah" = cheap) are deciding factors |
| servis aircond | servis aircond kereta, … rumah, … near me, … rumah berapa kali setahun, … sungai petani | Car vs home are separate intents; a "how often per year" question is a content opportunity |
| kedai perabot (furniture shop) | kedai perabot near me, … terpakai, … murah, … jati near me, … ipoh | Used ("terpakai"), teak ("jati") and price are sub-markets |
| aircon service | aircon service kl, … price malaysia, … cyberjaya, … cheras, … bukit jalil, … johor bahru | English searchers name neighborhoods, not just cities |
| 马来西亚 律师 (Malaysia lawyer) | 马来西亚律师事务所排名, 马来西亚律师咨询费, 马来西亚律师公会 | Chinese-language searchers ask about firm rankings and consultation fees |
How to turn that into a keyword list:
- Brainstorm in every language your customers use. Write down the Malay, English and (if relevant) Chinese word for each service. "Aircond" and "aircon" are both common; so are "servis" and "service".
- Run each seed through autocomplete in a private window, then add letters after the seed ("servis aircond a…", "servis aircond b…") to surface more.
- Check volumes in Google Keyword Planner with location set to Malaysia and the language set to Malay or English. It's free with a Google Ads account.
- Add your towns and neighborhoods. "aircon service cheras" is far easier to win than "aircon service".
- Look at page one for each keyword. If it's government sites, marketplaces and national chains, move to a more specific variant. Small sites, forums and thin directory pages mean you can win.
If you already have a site, Search Console shows what Malaysians search to find you: Performance → + Add filter → Country → Malaysia, then the Queries tab. For the general method, see our keyword research tutorial and how to find low-competition keywords. For reference, the median keyword Outrank targets for its customers has a difficulty of 14 out of 100 and 63% are under 20 (Outrank platform data, 90 days to October 2026).
Decide your languages and set up the pages properly
Pick languages from your customers, not from a rule. A Klang Valley B2B firm may need only English; a clinic in Kelantan needs Malay first; a tuition centre in Penang may need English, Malay and Chinese.
- One URL per language, for example
/ms/servis-aircondand/en/aircon-service, each written for that language's searches, not machine-translated word for word. - Use hreflang so Google shows the right version, as Google recommends for multilingual sites:
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-MY" href="https://example.com.my/en/aircon-service" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="ms-MY" href="https://example.com.my/ms/servis-aircond" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="zh-MY" href="https://example.com.my/zh/aircon-service" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com.my/en/aircon-service" />- Don't auto-redirect visitors by IP or browser language. Let them switch with a visible language selector; Googlebot needs to reach every version.
- Localize the keywords, not just the sentences. The Malay page should use "servis aircond rumah", not a literal translation of the English title.

Make it obvious you're a Malaysian business
Google has to work out which country your site serves. Help it, and help customers trust you:
- A .my domain (.my or .com.my, run by MYNIC) is the clearest signal. Google calls country-code domains "a strong signal to both users and search engines" that a site is intended for a certain country. A .com works too, but then the rest of this list matters more.
- Malaysian contact details on every page: a street address with postcode and state, a +60 phone number and a WhatsApp link if that's how customers reach you.
- Prices in RM, Malaysian spelling and local references (states, towns, public holidays).
- Your SSM registration number and business details. If you sell online, Malaysia's Consumer Protection (Electronic Trade Transactions) Regulations 2012 already require you to show your business name, registration number, email and phone or address, prices and terms on the site (summary by law firm DNH). It's also a strong trust signal for readers.
- LocalBusiness structured data with your Malaysian address, test it with Google's Rich Results Test:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"name": "Example Aircond Services",
"telephone": "+60 3-1234 5678",
"priceRange": "RM80 - RM250",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "12 Jalan Contoh",
"addressLocality": "Cheras",
"postalCode": "56000",
"addressRegion": "Kuala Lumpur",
"addressCountry": "MY"
}
}
</script>(The business and numbers are placeholders; use your own.) Server location matters much less: Google says it can be a signal but not a definitive one, since many sites use CDNs. A fast CDN beats a slow local host.
Win the map results with Google Business Profile

For "near me" searches like the ones above, the map results usually appear before the regular results. Google says local rankings depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.
- Choose the most specific primary category, and list every service, in the words customers search.
- Add opening hours (including public holiday hours), service areas, real photos and a WhatsApp or booking link.
- Use your real business name only. Google's guidelines don't allow adding services or locations to the name.
- Ask every satisfied customer for a review and reply to each one, in the language it was written in.
Get listed and linked on Malaysian sites
Links and mentions from Malaysian websites tell Google you're relevant to Malaysian searchers. Start with platforms where your customers already look:
| Platform | What it is | Worth it for |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Google Maps and local results | Every business with a location or service area |
| Recommend.my | Marketplace for home service professionals | Contractors, cleaners, aircond, renovation, movers |
| Mudah.my | Large Malaysian classifieds marketplace | Sellers of goods, cars, property |
| PropertyGuru / iProperty | Property listing portals | Agents and developers |
| Carlist.my | Car listings | Dealers and workshops |
| foodpanda | Food delivery platform | Restaurants and cafés |
| Lowyat.NET forum | Large Malaysian online forum | Tech, gadgets, consumer services (participate, don't spam) |
| Yellow Pages Malaysia | Business directory | Basic citation with consistent details |
Then earn editorial links:
- Trade associations and chambers you belong to usually list members with a link.
- Suppliers, brands you stock and partners often have "where to buy" or "our partners" pages.
- Local data people will cite: a yearly price guide ("aircond servicing prices in Klang Valley 2026"), a map, or a simple calculator. Malaysian news and lifestyle sites link to useful local data.
- Sponsor or speak at local events, university clubs and community programmes; event pages link to sponsors.
Skip paid link packages and foreign "SEO directories". Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking as link spam. Our guide to building backlinks covers outreach in detail, and if you'd rather automate it, Outrank's backlink exchange places in-article links on relevant sites in its network (matched by niche, not by country).
Write content that answers Malaysian questions
The best content opportunities are questions only a local business can answer well:
- Prices in RM with what drives them: "berapa harga servis aircond rumah" deserves a real table by unit type and area, not "it depends".
- Local rules and processes: permits, government vs private options ("klinik gigi kerajaan" vs private), what documents customers need.
- Seasonality: demand shifts around Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and school holidays. Check Google Trends with the region set to Malaysia and publish two to four weeks before the peak.
- Answer first, in each language. Since AI Overviews are available in Malaysia, in Malay as well as English, a page that answers clearly in the first two sentences has a better chance of being quoted.
One good page per real question beats ten thin ones. If producing enough pages is the bottleneck, Outrank finds low-competition keywords for your site, writes articles in 150+ languages and publishes one a day to your CMS.
How long does it take to reach page 1 in Malaysia?
For a specific local keyword ("aircon service cheras") with a complete Business Profile, a few weeks to three months is realistic. For competitive national terms, expect six to twelve months and real link building.
Across Outrank customer sites worldwide, median Google clicks were up 28% after 12 weeks and about doubled after seven months (Outrank results data). Ahrefs found the average #1 result is 5 years old. Start with the long tail and widen as your authority grows. If nothing has moved after three months, revisit the common small business SEO mistakes.

FAQ
How do I get my website on the first page of Google in Malaysia?
Target specific keywords in the languages your customers search in, often a Malay service word plus a town or "near me". Make each page the clearest answer for that search, show Malaysian signals such as an address, +60 phone and RM prices, complete your Google Business Profile, and earn links from Malaysian sites. Expect results on local long-tail keywords within a few months.
Do I need a .my domain to rank in Malaysia?
No, but it helps. Google describes country-code domains as a strong signal that a site targets a specific country. A .com can rank well in Malaysia if the content, address, phone number, prices and links are clearly Malaysian.
Should my website be in Bahasa Melayu or English?
Follow your customers' searches. Autocomplete shows many Malaysians search with Malay service words even when they add English phrases, so service businesses outside purely corporate markets usually benefit from Malay pages. Use separate URLs for each language with hreflang tags rather than mixing both on one page.
Which search engine do Malaysians use most?
Google, with 91.2% of searches in September 2026 according to StatCounter. Bing had 5.7% and Yahoo 2.0%. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools is quick and worth doing, but your strategy should be built around Google.
How long does SEO take in Malaysia?
Specific local keywords can reach page one within weeks to three months, especially with a complete Business Profile. Competitive national keywords usually take six to twelve months. Across Outrank customer sites, median Google clicks grew 28% after 12 weeks and roughly doubled after seven months.
Does Google show AI Overviews in Malaysia?
Yes. Google lists Malaysia among the countries where AI Overviews are available, and Malay among the supported languages. Pages that answer a question clearly in the first sentences, in the searcher's language, are better placed to be cited.
