To optimize for voice search, make your site the easiest source for an assistant to quote: answer each question in one or two plain sentences directly under a heading that matches how people ask it, keep those pages fast and crawlable, and keep your business listings (Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp) complete and consistent. Assistants read one answer aloud, not ten links, so being the clearest source matters more than ranking third.

The rules shifted in 2025 and 2026 because voice assistants became AI chatbots. Google began replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android phones on September 4, 2026, Alexa+ reached all US customers in February 2026, and Siri can hand open questions to ChatGPT. This guide covers where those assistants get their answers and the work that makes you the source.

Key takeaways

  • Voice answers come from three places: web pages in the assistant's search index, business listings for local questions, and the assistant's own model. Optimize the first two.
  • Lead each section with a self-contained answer of about 30 words. In a 2018 study of 10,000 Google Home answers, the average spoken answer was 29 words.
  • Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, and HowTo rich results in 2023. Schema helps machines read a page, but it won't win a voice answer by itself.
  • Conversational questions rarely produce clicks: in our analysis of 1.2 million Search Console queries, 96% of long conversational questions got none. Measure calls, visits and mentions too.
  • Smart speakers are still growing: 39% of Americans aged 12+ owned one in January 2026, up from 35% a year earlier (Edison Research).

What voice search looks like in 2026

Voice search is any search spoken to a device instead of typed: asking your phone for the nearest pharmacy, asking a kitchen speaker how long to boil an egg, or talking to ChatGPT in the car. The audience is large. Edison Research's Infinite Dial 2026 estimates that 39% of Americans aged 12 and older, about 112 million people, own a smart speaker, and every smartphone has an assistant built in.

What changed is who answers. The assistants that used to read a featured snippet now generate a spoken answer with an AI model, grounded in search results and business data:

AssistantStatus in October 2026Where its answers come fromWhat you can influence
Google GeminiReplacing Google Assistant on Android phones from September 4, 2026; Gemini for Home rolling out on Nest speakers since October 2025Google's search index, Google Maps and Business ProfilesIndexable answer pages, Google Business Profile, not blocking Google-Extended
Apple SiriHands open questions to ChatGPT when you allow it; Apple and Google announced in January 2026 that Apple's next AI features build on Gemini modelsApple Maps for places (Yelp is a data partner), ChatGPT for open questionsApple Business Connect, Yelp, crawlable pages
Amazon Alexa+Available to all US customers since February 4, 2026Amazon's models and data; place details (hours, phone, ratings) come from data providers through Amazon's point-of-interest catalogAccurate, consistent business data across the directories that feed it
ChatGPT (voice mode)Voice mode built into the ChatGPT appsChatGPT search when it looks things up, which crawls with OAI-SearchBot; Yelp licensed its local data to OpenAI in 2026Allowing OAI-SearchBot, Yelp listing

The practical consequence: there is no separate "voice index". Voice optimization is answer optimization for the search systems these assistants use, plus clean local listings. The same work makes you more likely to be recommended by ChatGPT and quoted in AI Overviews.

How voice queries differ, and why they rarely click

Spoken queries are longer and shaped like questions. People type "boil egg time" and say "how long do I boil an egg for a runny yolk?" They also skew local and urgent: "is the hardware store on Main Street open right now?"

Search Console doesn't label voice queries, but you can see how conversational, question-shaped queries behave because they already show up in your data. In our query fan-out study of 1.2 million queries from 111 sites, long conversational questions almost never earned a click, and question queries in the top three positions earned 58% fewer clicks than other queries at the same position.

  • Long conversational questions

  • Chatbot-style prompts

  • Normal human queries

That's not a reason to skip voice. It's a reason to measure it properly: a spoken answer that names your business, or a "call" tap from a Business Profile, is worth more than a click and shows up in different reports (see the measurement section below).

Step 1: Find the questions people actually ask

Start with questions you already rank for. In Google Search Console, open Performance → Search results, click Add filter → Query → Custom (regex) and paste:

^(who|what|when|where|why|how|which|can|does|do|is|are|should)\s

That lists every question-shaped query with its impressions and position. To find long, conversational queries of seven words or more, use ^(\S+\s+){6,}\S+$ instead. Questions where you sit in positions 4 to 15 are your best targets: Google already considers you relevant.

Then add questions from outside Search Console:

  • People Also Ask boxes for your main topics, and tools such as AlsoAsked or AnswerThePublic that collect them.
  • Your sales calls, support tickets and reviews. The exact phrasing customers use on the phone is the phrasing they use with an assistant.
  • "Near me" and "open now" variants of your services, if you serve a local area.

To see how a single page performs for these questions, run an SEO page content analysis on it. Our guide to long-tail keyword research covers the wider process, and questions, not keywords explains why question coverage matters for AI search in general.

Step 2: Write answers an assistant can read aloud

An assistant needs a passage it can lift out and say in one breath. Structure every answer the same way:

  1. Use the question as the heading, in the searcher's words: "How long does SEO take to work?", not "Timeframes".
  2. Answer in the first one or two sentences, about 30 words, complete on their own. Backlinko's 2018 study of 10,000 Google Home results found the average voice answer was 29 words and that 40.7% came from a featured snippet. The assistants have changed since, but a short, self-contained answer is still what gets lifted.
  3. Add the detail after the answer: steps, exceptions, numbers, sources.
  4. Read it out loud. If you run out of breath or need the screen to understand it, rewrite it.

Here's the difference on a real question.

Before: "There are many factors that influence how quickly a website can see results from search engine optimization, including competition, domain history and the quality of the content, so it's hard to give a definitive answer."

After: "SEO usually shows early gains within one to three months and compounds after that. In our data from 2,119 sites, median Google clicks were 7% higher after the first 28 days, 27% higher after 84 days and double by month seven."

The second version answers, gives numbers, and names its source (our AI SEO agent study). Definitions work the same way: open with "X is…" in one sentence. The formats that win featured snippets, such as short paragraphs, numbered steps and simple tables, are the same ones assistants find easy to read.

Step 3: Make your pages easy to fetch and trust

Answer quality only counts if the assistant's search system can reach and trust the page.

  • Don't block the crawlers behind the assistants. Check robots.txt for rules that block Googlebot, Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot. Google says the Google-Extended token controls whether your content grounds Gemini's answers; read our guide to Google-Extended before you block it.
  • Keep answer pages indexable and fast. Use PageSpeed Insights to check Core Web Vitals on mobile. Our article on whether page speed affects AI SEO covers what the data shows.
  • Put the answer in the HTML. Text that only appears after JavaScript runs, inside tabs or in images is harder for crawlers to read. See how AI reads your website.
  • Use structured data for facts, not for tricks. LocalBusiness (address, hours, phone), Organization and Product markup still help machines read key facts. FAQ markup no longer produces a rich result in Google (the feature ended May 7, 2026), and HowTo rich results ended in 2023. Google's speakable markup is still in beta and limited to news publishers' English-language content for Google Home devices in the US.

Step 4: Win local voice searches with complete listings

For "near me", "open now" and "call the…" questions, assistants mostly answer from business listings, not web pages. Each ecosystem has its own:

ListingFeedsWhere to manage it
Google Business ProfileGemini, Google Maps, Google Searchbusiness.google.com
Apple Business ConnectSiri, Apple Mapsbusinessconnect.apple.com
Bing PlacesBing, Copilotbingplaces.com
YelpApple Maps, ChatGPT local recommendationsbiz.yelp.com

For each one:

  • Keep name, address and phone identical everywhere. Inconsistent details give assistants a reason to doubt which one is right.
  • Fill in hours, including holiday hours. "Open now" questions are filtered on them, and wrong hours are the fastest way to lose a customer who believed the assistant.
  • Pick specific categories (primary category "Emergency plumber", not just "Plumber", if that's what you do) and list your services.
  • Collect reviews steadily and reply to them. Review text that mentions services and neighborhoods helps assistants match you to spoken requests.

Then back the listings with location pages on your site that answer local questions directly. Our SEO for small business guide and niche playbooks such as SEO for restaurants and SEO for plumbers go further.

Step 5: Measure voice search the right way

You won't find a "voice" filter anywhere, so combine signals:

  • Search Console: track impressions, average position and clicks for your question-regex filter month over month.
  • Google Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests and website clicks are where local voice searches end up.
  • Your own forms and calls: add "an assistant like Siri, Alexa or ChatGPT" to your "how did you hear about us" options.
  • AI answers: check whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention you for your main questions. Doing this by hand gets tedious fast; Outrank's AI visibility tracking monitors mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Outrank also handles the content side: it finds the long-tail questions your site can rank for and publishes answer-first articles with an FAQ section every day, so your coverage of spoken questions grows without a writing team.

FAQ

What is voice search optimization?

Voice search optimization is making your content and business information easy for voice assistants to find and read aloud. It means answering spoken-style questions concisely on crawlable pages, and keeping listings such as Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect accurate. In 2026 it overlaps heavily with optimizing for AI answers, since assistants like Gemini and Alexa+ now run on AI models.

Find the questions your audience asks, give each one its own heading, and answer it in the first one or two sentences in about 30 words. Keep pages fast, indexable and open to the crawlers assistants rely on. If you serve a local area, complete your Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and Yelp listings with identical details.

Is voice search still relevant in 2026?

Yes, and arguably more than before. Edison Research estimates 39% of Americans aged 12+ owned a smart speaker in January 2026, and every major assistant has been rebuilt on an AI model that can answer far more questions by voice. What changed is that answers are generated from search results and listings, so clear sources matter more than exact-match keywords.

Which search engine do Siri and Alexa use?

Neither relies on a single engine anymore. Siri answers place questions from Apple Maps, which you manage through Apple Business Connect, and can pass open questions to ChatGPT. Alexa+ runs on Amazon's own AI models and data, and the classic Alexa used Bing for web answers, so a Bing Places listing and Bing Webmaster Tools are cheap insurance.

How long should a voice search answer be?

Aim for one or two sentences, around 30 words, that answer the question completely on their own. Backlinko's 2018 analysis of 10,000 Google Home results found an average answer of 29 words. Put supporting detail after that first answer rather than before it.

Not on Google anymore. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, after limiting them to government and health sites in 2023. A clear question-and-answer layout on the page still helps, because assistants and AI search tools read the visible text.
