Semrush is accurate where it measures things directly (rankings it checks, pages it crawls) and only roughly accurate where it estimates (traffic, search volume, keyword difficulty). The two largest comparisons against Google Search Console put Semrush's organic traffic estimates off by an average of 61.58% across 184 sites (Collaborator, 2024) and by a median of 68.36% across 1,635 sites (Ahrefs, 2022). That is fine for comparing competitors and spotting trends, and wrong for reporting your own numbers.

This page breaks down each Semrush metric by how it is produced and how far you can trust it, summarizes the independent tests, and gives you a 15-minute method (with a calculator) to measure Semrush's accuracy on your own site.

Key takeaways

  • Semrush traffic estimates missed Search Console by 61.58% on average across 184 sites (Collaborator, H1 2024) and overestimated 112 of them. Accuracy dropped sharply for sites under 5,000 clicks a month.
  • No tool is precise. In Ahrefs' own 1,635-site test, Ahrefs missed by a median 49.52% and Semrush by 68.36%; the Collaborator study found errors of roughly 50% across all three tools tested.
  • Use Search Console and GA4 for your own site, always. Use Semrush for competitors, relative comparisons and trends.
  • Rank tracking and Site Audit are Semrush's most reliable data, because they are direct measurements, not models.
  • Keyword volume and KD% are directional. Compare keywords inside one tool; never compare a Semrush KD% with an Ahrefs KD.

Which Semrush metrics are accurate?

Accuracy depends on whether a number is measured or modeled. Here is every major Semrush metric sorted by that test:

MetricHow Semrush gets itHow much to trust itUse it for
Position Tracking (your rankings)Checks Google results for your keywords on a scheduleHigh, within normal SERP variation by location and deviceDaily rank monitoring
Site AuditCrawls your pagesHigh for what it crawls (broken links, redirects, tags)Technical fixes
BacklinksCrawler index; Semrush lists 43 trillion backlinks and 808 million domainsMedium: no tool sees the whole web, and counts differ between toolsFinding links and prospects, comparing domains
Keyword search volumeThird-party data plus Semrush's models, shown as monthly averagesMedium: directional, weakest for low-volume long-tail keywordsPrioritizing keywords against each other
Keyword Difficulty (KD%)Model of the ranking pages' referring domains, link mix, authority and SERP traitsMedium: relative, tool-specificSorting keywords by effort
Organic traffic (any domain)Rankings × volumes × click-through model, plus clickstream panel dataLow to medium: 50% to 70% average error in testsCompetitor trends and comparisons
Traffic Analytics (all channels)Panel and clickstream dataLow for small sites, better for large onesMarket-level comparisons
Authority ScoreProprietary scoreRelative onlyComparing domains inside Semrush

The pattern holds for every SEO suite, not just Semrush: direct measurements are reliable, and modeled numbers are directional.

What independent tests found

Three studies compared Semrush with real Search Console data. None is peer-reviewed, and one was run by a competitor, so read them together rather than picking a favorite.

StudySampleSemrush resultComparison
Collaborator / Promodo, published Dec 2024184 sites, first half of 2024, Search Console as ground truth61.58% average error; overestimated 112 of 184 sitesSimilarweb 56.95%, Ahrefs 48.63% (Ahrefs tended to underestimate)
Ahrefs, May 20221,635 random sites, U.S. organic traffic68.36% median deviation; 0.74 correlation with Search ConsoleAhrefs 49.52% median deviation; 0.76 correlation (vendor-run)
Semrush, March 202210,000 keywords, search volume vs Search Console impressionsSemrush reported its own volumes as closestVendor-run; impressions are only a proxy for volume

Two findings matter more than the headline error rates:

  1. Correlation is decent even when the error is large. A 0.74 correlation means Semrush usually gets the direction and the relative size of sites right, even when the absolute number is far off. That is why it works for competitor comparisons.
  2. Small sites get the worst estimates. The Collaborator study found Semrush's accuracy "drops significantly" for sites under 5,000 clicks a month. The Ahrefs study reported individual errors ranging from under 5% to more than 1,000%. If your competitor is a small site, treat its traffic estimate as a rough order of magnitude.

Why Semrush traffic differs from your Google Analytics

Semrush's traffic estimate and your analytics measure different things in different ways:

  • Semrush estimates organic search clicks from the keywords in its database, your positions for them, their volumes and a click-through model. GA4 counts sessions from every channel, filtered by consent and tracking.
  • Keyword coverage is incomplete. Ahrefs' study lists the four places errors creep in: the keywords a tool knows a site ranks for, the search volumes, the ranking positions and the click-through prediction. Long-tail-heavy sites get undercounted when their queries aren't in the database; sites ranking for big head terms with AI Overviews or ads above them get overcounted.
  • Click-through rates keep moving. When Google shows an AI summary, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits versus 15% without one (Pew Research Center, 2025). Any fixed CTR model drifts as SERPs change.
  • Countries and databases. Semrush reports per country database (it has 142). Compare Semrush's U.S. number with Search Console filtered to the United States, not with your worldwide total.

Is Semrush's search volume accurate?

Semrush's volumes are monthly averages, like Google Keyword Planner's, so seasonal keywords look flat and trending ones lag. Even Ahrefs, in a 2024 article, argues that no tool's search volume is "accurate", only directionally accurate, and notes that Keyword Planner itself shows rounded annual averages in volume buckets.

Where it matters most is the long tail. Of the 189,369 articles Outrank wrote for customer sites in the 90 days to October 2026 that had a known target-keyword volume, 22.3% targeted keywords with fewer than 50 searches a month and the median was 170 (Outrank platform data). At that size, a difference of 20 or 30 searches is a large percentage error and a small practical one. Use volume to rank keywords against each other, then let Search Console impressions tell you the real demand once you rank. Our guide on checking keyword search volume compares free sources.

Is Semrush's Keyword Difficulty accurate?

Semrush's KD% help page says the score (0 to 100) is based on the median number of referring domains to the ranking URLs, the median dofollow-to-nofollow ratio, the median Authority Score of the ranking domains, and the SERP qualities of the keyword. Its bands run from 0-14 "very easy" to 85-100 "very hard".

KD% is a useful sorting tool and a poor absolute prediction. It doesn't know your site's authority, topical coverage or content quality, so a "possible" keyword (30-49) can be easy for an established site and out of reach for a new one. It also isn't comparable with Ahrefs KD, which uses a different formula and scale; see Semrush vs Ahrefs for keyword research for the side-by-side, and what keyword difficulty means for how to read either.

Test Semrush's accuracy on your own site in 15 minutes

The studies tell you the average. Your site is not average. Run this check once and you'll know how much to discount Semrush's numbers for your niche, and by extension for competitors that look like you.

  1. 1

    Get Semrush's estimate

In Semrush, open Domain Overview, enter your domain, choose the country database you care about (for example US), and note Organic Search Traffic for the last full month. Organic Research → Overview shows the monthly trend if you want three months.
  2. 2

    Get the real number

In Google Search Console, open Performance → Search results, set the date range to the same full month, keep search type Web, and add a Country filter for the same country. Note Total clicks.
  3. 3

    Check a few keyword volumes

In the Queries tab, pick 5 to 10 non-branded queries where your average position is 1 to 3. Compare their monthly impressions with Semrush's volume in Keyword Overview for the same country. Expect gaps for seasonal terms.
  4. 4

Run the numbers below and repeat quarterly

One month can mislead. Three months show whether Semrush consistently over- or underestimates your kind of site.

For reference, the average Semrush traffic error was 61.58% across 184 sites in the Collaborator study and the median was 68.36% across 1,635 sites in Ahrefs' study. Impressions are only a proxy for volume: they depend on your position and on SERP features.

If your error is consistent (say, Semrush always shows about 1.4× your real clicks), you can mentally adjust competitor estimates in the same niche. If it swings from month to month, rely on Semrush only for direction.

How to use Semrush data without being misled

  • Never report your own traffic from Semrush. Use Search Console for search clicks and GA4 for sessions and conversions.
  • Compare like with like. Same country database, same month, same metric, same tool. Mixing Semrush's competitor traffic with your GA4 sessions guarantees a wrong conclusion.
  • Read trends, not points. A competitor's estimated traffic doubling over six months is a real signal even if both numbers are off.
  • Check volumes against a second source for important keywords: Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or your own Search Console impressions once you rank.
  • Validate KD with the SERP. Open the results. If the top 10 has forums, thin pages or sites like yours, the keyword is easier than any score suggests.

Is Semrush worth it if the data is approximate?

For competitive research, yes: rankings, keyword gaps, competitor content, backlinks and trends don't need to be precise to be useful. As of October 2026, Semrush's plans start at $139 a month for the SEO plan, with SEO + AI Search plans at $199 (Starter) and $299 (Pro+) a month billed monthly, according to its pricing page. If you mainly use it to pick blog keywords and write articles, you may be paying for far more than you use. Our list of cheaper Semrush alternatives covers lighter tools, and Outrank includes unlimited keyword research with live volume and difficulty in its $99 plan, then writes and publishes the articles for you.

FAQ

How accurate is Semrush traffic data?

Not very, in absolute terms. Independent comparisons with Google Search Console found an average error of 61.58% across 184 sites (Collaborator, 2024) and a median deviation of 68.36% across 1,635 sites (Ahrefs, 2022). It is far more useful for comparing sites and spotting trends than for exact visitor counts.

Is Semrush more accurate than Ahrefs?

For traffic estimates, both published studies found Ahrefs closer to Search Console: 48.63% average error versus 61.58% for Semrush in the Collaborator study, and 49.52% versus 68.36% median deviation in Ahrefs' own study. Both tools are directional, and for keyword volume each vendor's own study favors itself.

Why is Semrush traffic so different from Google Analytics?

Semrush estimates organic search clicks from the keywords it knows you rank for, their volumes and a click-through model, for one country. Google Analytics counts actual sessions from every channel, subject to consent and tracking. They measure different things, so compare Semrush with Search Console clicks for the same country instead.

Is Semrush keyword difficulty accurate?

KD% is a consistent relative score, not a prediction for your site. It is based on the ranking pages' referring domains, link mix, authority and SERP features, so it ignores your own site's strength. Use it to sort keywords, then check the actual search results before committing.

Is Semrush accurate for small websites?

Least of all. The Collaborator study found Semrush's traffic accuracy drops significantly for sites under 5,000 clicks a month, because a handful of missing or mis-modeled keywords makes a big percentage difference. For small competitors, treat Semrush's numbers as rough orders of magnitude.
